When Do Bred Males Start Eating Again?

pyromaniac Mar 31, 2011 06:44 PM

Such a busy boy!
This is Mazar with his second mate Zunchara today. He has mated with her several times already. He has already gotten his first mate Dotz gravid. He has not eaten since 2-22-11, and is looking a tad thin. I don't have any other pyro females that would be releasing any more pheromones, so how soon after I take Zunchara out and put her in her maternity tub, leaving him by himself, will he start eating again? He had 22 days with Dotz and is on day 9 with Zunchara. I'd like to separate them as soon as possible. I don't want the poor boy to get too worn out. He is in the moist sphagnum moss hide this afternoon, something he rarely does, so I think he may be done mating.

I have had male pueblans go almost 75 days without a meal. I literally had to move him to another room to get him to eat...That is one extreme that I have had, but normally if I move them to be by themselves and clean the cage so there is no smell of a female and offer a smaller meal they will eat periodically...Just my experiences....Good Luck Bob they sure look swell! Can't wait to see what the produce!

Ah, clean the cage so there is no female smell...I never would have thought of that! LOL! Thanks! What I am going to do is put him in a clean tub out in the mouse barn where he wont be able to smell anything but mice!

I just did exactly that (moved him in a clean tub to the mouse barn). He had been looking sort of restless in spite of having a fertile female in the big breeder cage with him. I figured he had mated with her enough that she was no longer putting out the breeding pheromones so much. He looked really thin to me although he only lost about 15 grams over the mating season, going from 160 grams on the last time he hate in February to 145 grams today. He is only an 08 and I think he should have the chance to grow some more. I put a fuzzie in with him.

I put his mate in her maternity tub. That is it for the matings this year. Now to wait for the eggs!

Bob it probably varies from snake to snake and species too. If he won't eat a normal meal try enticing him with smaller meals like, fuzzies or even large pinkies to get him back on track. That works for most of my snakes, though most will eat quickly. Pyros are a bit different, I will admit. I never had luck with them. I think I was treating them like a King or Milk snake.

He is in the mouse barn away from all female snake smells, even the juvenile pyros and adult pituophis (in the unlikely but possible chance they also could be releasing pheromones of interest). So I am offering him pinks and fuzzies. I gave him a small fuzzie last night but he has not eaten it yet. I expect it will take about a week or so for him to forget about sex. I hope! LOL! He generally is a good eater. This breeding season he certainly gave it his all; what a good boy!

I treat all my kings, milks and pyros (all colubrids for that matter) exactly the same......
But good advice Jorge......smaller meals usually do the trick......
