A bit confused...

CarlKoch Apr 01, 2011 09:43 PM

Back in early Feb. I posted about a pair of corns I have that bred at that time.

In mid-March the female had what I thought was her pre-laying shed. I removed the male and put in a laying box. She has spent a lot of time in the box since then, but has not laid eggs. I palped her and don't feel anything. Oddly enough, she is now going into another shed cycle, though she hasn't been feeding. Any thoughts as to what is going on here?

Sounds like she re-absorbed the eggs. Just my first hunch. If the eggs didn't get fertilized many times they will re-absorb.

Interesting. Well, the male was in with her up until 2 weeks ago...I would think they probably mated more than the one time I observed. I'm also still confused as to why she won't eat.

I'm just guessing, but if she re-absorbed a whole clutch of eggs she may not be hungry? Are you sure you don't feel any eggs in her anymore?

Ah yes -- very good point, Jorge! Never did feel any eggs in her. I'll check her again after this new shed cycle's over. Perhaps she's retaining the sperm until ovulation?

That could very well be Carl! I see people with snakes laying eggs already, mine have just started to mate, lol.

I would let the male and female get together again after her current shed cycle just to be safe.

I would too, it's still early-on in the season for plenty of action to take place.
