Rubbing Your Nose In It!

pyromaniac Apr 02, 2011 06:12 PM

Well, a couple days ago I put my male pyro in the mouse barn to get him away from any female pheromones. I had put a large live pinkie in with him but he showed no interest. He hadn't eaten since February 22 and then had two long runs with my females, which used his stores and made him thin. Today I said what the devil, and lanced a pinkie's head and poked Mazar's snout into the wound, smearing blood and brain on his snout. Then I put him in a feeding jar with that pink and went away for about 10 minutes. He ate that pink. Finally. He will be kept in the mouse barn until he fattens back up.

I do this blood and brains trick with little baby snakes but this is the first time I have done this with an adult.

Bob, from my experiences sometimes you have to get that stubborn "sex" thing out of the males brain, unfortunately easier said than done sometimes...I actually have a male knob that usually pounds weanlings to adult mice but for some reason for the past 2 years he will only eat fuzzies during breeding season and only 1. Sometimes he won't eat at all, but I always try.

Glad to see you have a meal in him finally!!!! Drastic changes sometimes calls for drastic measures!

If somebody grabbed me by the neck and rubbed my nose into a mess of blood and brains I think I'd forget all about sex, too! Of course, in this case maybe it would be more like rubbing one's nose in a porterhouse steak. Definitely hit his reset button!

Porterhouse steak! Reminds me of a Man vs Food episode when he was eating a 48 oz steak in 20 minutes.....

Thanks, Jorge!
I was getting worried about Mazar because it seems the window of opportunity for feeding a lot is mostly in the spring and early summer, and then they begin to slack off, although there are exceptions. I was concerned he would take too long to begin feeding again and go into summer thin.
