please help- found snake outside in road

d + s Sep 28, 2003 07:21 PM

hey guys. i keep boas and i've never had a colubrid in my life. so i'd like some help, please... anyway, my mom alerted me to a baby snake outside near her car. i collected it and put it in a spare 10 gallon tank to keep it out of harm's way and with luck, give it a home or find a safe place for it to be. i'm assuming it's a corn snake. however, most corn snakes i see mentioned seem to be red in colour and this guy is brown. so, i'm not so sure about the ID of this snake. i was wondering if you could please help me out. this is the best picture i could take because i have a really [bleep]ty webcam. he looks to be really alert, healthy and docile. i'm assuming someone lost or let go of their pet. what do you guys think?

if you'd like, email me at ysseikkles@hotmail.com

here's his picture.

anyway, at least he came to the driveway of a boa owner who happens to have a spare tank, dish, heat pad and hidey log.

but please, any help or ideas at all would be greatly appreciated.

thank you!

thanks. i'm currently trying to find information on native snakes here, but it's proving more difficult than i figured it would be. do you think it's wild? if it is, i'll let him go back. but if he's captive bred, i'd like to know and find him a home.

i know *nothing* about colubrids. i feel lame not being able to identify a snake after owning them for 15 years haha.

oh yes, definitely a gopher. i live on the border of california and oregon, by the coast. so i'm assuming it's a great basin gopher. do you know anything about these, having gopher snakes yourself?

he's a hatchling. he is very healthy. good muscle tone, bright eyes, fast and constant tongue flicker. he seems ridiculously docile. i know i should let him go, but i'm having that bad issue where i'm like, 'b-but he's so CUTE and i happen to have a setup right here!'

bad bad me :<

but it happens to most snake lovers, right? ::whine::

do you see many gophers around your house? if not, it may be captive bred, but i wouldnt know..you could probably keep it, maybe take it to a vet and make sure it doesnt have any parasites or any other health issues.

actually, i have never seen a snake here before. neither has my mom who has lived here for almost 10 years now. because he was so friendly and healthy, i thought for sure he was someone's pet. but then looking up gopher snakes online, it seems that they're quite prolific in oregon and california. so i'd assume that he was wild.

i just have such a hard time looking into a little neonate's big puppy dog eyes and saying, 'look little fella, i know yer dumb as a post because i just found you on a driveway of all places with your devil-may-care attitude... but i got to let you go and have you be eaten alive!'

he's got such a pretty red tail, too. and you know what us boa lovers do around something with a red tail.

well that sounded weird.

I too live in oregon, it looks like a Pacific Gopher. They are found throughout California, Oregon, and even into Washington. I have one that was caught in CA desert... They do make great pets. And should feed quite nicely on normal mice. If you do let if go, take it somewhere humans are not likely to find it...large field would be nice. Dont feel to guilty if you decide to keep it, just make sure it gets a home for life...
