Nile Monitor's mouth

jonkatz Apr 03, 2011 05:25 PM

My little (less than a foot) Nile Monitor has a jaw that seems to be slightly open all the time even though its mouth is closed. I know that means I have done something wrong, and it is a very common thing for stupid people to do, but I don't remember what it is that I have done wrong. What is it?

What type of bedding do you have? Look real close to see if there is anything in the corners of its mouth. Also... make sure the temps are not too hot. Excessive heat will make them bask with their mouths open.

I'd clarify that a bit, Gular flapping under high heat is not a bad thing. It is normal for monitors to seek out temps that high at some points in time depending on their needs. The problem is when they don't have the option to cool down. I don't think a monitor would survive for more than a couple days in temps hot enough to keep it gular flapping all the time though. That said what are the temps in your cage? What about substrate and furniture? How are you heating it?

Can you offer a picture?

What you are describing does not sound like "gullar flapping" at all. Although this is a common phenomenon with these guys- your description seems to be supporting something different.

What is your set up/caging like? How long have you had this animal? What are you offering as food?

These questions, and more so, the answers to them are of relevance.

We cannot fail to recognize or question nutrition and overall support (proper heat, etc.) regarding this.

Thanks.
