Utah Locality Intermontane Rats

ShaunVought Apr 03, 2011 08:19 PM

Several years ago I was granted a permit to collect 2 Utah intermontane rat snakes by Utah's DWR. After collecting a young male and female I sent in a application for a propagation permit (because this form of rat snake is protected in Utah), which was approved. It took two years for the pair that I collected to become sexually mature and in 2008 I was able to get a clutch of 5 perfect eggs, they all hatched. In 2009 I received another clutch of 4 perfect eggs and they all hatched. In 2010 another clutch of 4 eggs were laid and all eggs again hatched. I have kept back almost all of those hatchlings from the three seperate clutches. In my opinion, they are by far, the most attractive of the Great Plains Rat snakes. I've attatched a picture of one of the 2008 snakes and one of the 2010 hatchlings. They hatch out looking like a nice but fairly normal emoryi but as they mature they definitely stand out. What do you guys think?

I love the look of that locale. I've seen the picture that KJ Lodrigue has and I have a pair of his colorado line. It would be cool if that locale would become available, but just being able to see pics is nice too. I love the intermontanes. Here are some old pics of mine. They look much different now. I need to update.

Matt,
Thanks for the comments. The Utah rats that KJ has came from my first clutch of eggs. I also have a pair of the KJ's Colorado strain intermontanes and they look quite a bit like yours. As yours have grown have their blotches faded mostly away and revealed a rose colored iridescence like mine have?

Yes the female's blotches have faded a lot. The male has retained his more, although he hasn't grown as fast and is smaller.

Hey Shaun

I have seen your animals in person and they are pretty dang nice. That one individual I seen that is silver with greenish blotches, makes me drool. What makes them cool "besides their colors" is that they are Utah locality intermontanes. Plus you paperwork on them.

Shaun,

I know that a lot of people have been waiting for these for quite a while. Legal Utah Rats are impossible to acquire elsewhere. Anyone interested in locality Utah Emoryi should pick these up while they can! Awesome snakes Shaun!
