Those are pretty nice looking. It appears you find a lot of individuals in your back yard. Were about do you live? I set off on a quest to find a very abnormal Alligator Lizard today but unfortunately my trip was cut short do to an illness. This particular individual was Unique both in color and pattern. Hopefully I will be able to replan the trip for next week when I am feeling better. Are you studying S. Alligator lizards? If so I would be interested in possibly exchanging information
Foot Hill Reptile Relocation, Research and Conservation
I live on the outskirts of Orcutt, a little town just outside of Santa Maria in Sant Barbara County CA. I'm not studying alligator lizards, but I am intensly interested in them.
I have 3 long term captives who I'm sure you've seen plenty of pictures of, and my 15 hatchlings. Luckily I work in an office full of biologists some of whom lept at the chance of getting a tame alligator lizard or two (the babies I hatched out are incredibly friendly and unafraid of people) so I know they'll be going to good homes.
My yard is in a fairly natural state (lots of long grass and woodpiles). Much of the property surrounding the developement I live in is being converted from pasture land to vineyards so I think that a lot of alligator lizards are moving into my yard.
By the way the pair pictured were released, although I'm not opposed to collecting and keeping alligator lizards as pets, I think that it is best to leave mature animals in the wild. Because the young have such high mortality rates naturally removing a few does not have a big impact on the population. But, when mature animals of reproductive age are removed this can have a much bigger impact. Besides, the babies make better pets.
What kind of research are you involved in?
What kind of alligator lizard were you looking for?
