Is she too fat? LOL!

ShadyLady Apr 04, 2011 09:01 PM

This is my old lady snake, Miss Pink. I thought she was around 15 or 16, but turns out she's at least a couple of years older, maybe more. Pink ate three meals out of brumation (out 2/20) and then stopped eating. I thought she was going into shed as all the other adult females were at that time. Next feeding I saw how FAT she was (3/13) so I didn't even try to feed her. Obviously ovulating. She is still refusing food. She has never shed since brumation. I put my lavender motley male in with her 3/26 and 3/28. Her belly is really lumpy with eggs. Do you all think they would have gotten fertilized? I went ahead and gave her her nest box today since she doesn't seem to be following the rules. LOL!

I wasn't going to breed her this year, but since she's going to all that trouble....

Oh, she's 4 feet 4 inches long, and weighs 40.8 ounces, or 156 grams.

She's a great old snake. When she's not gravid, she's a chow hound as you can probably tell. When she's in shed and can't see, she'll open her mouth for me to place the mouse in it.

That is a seriously gravid snake. What's her actual weight? No way a snake that big is only 156 grams.

shadylady Apr 05, 2011 12:39 PM

Ha, ha, I wondered that, too. When I switched between ounces and grams on my scale, it said 156 grams. ??? How many grams is 40.8 ounces? I guess pounds would be about 2.5?

Doug did the proper calculation, below. 1,156 grams. I must have missed a '1' while reading the scale thru the plastic box.

I don't see any reason why they shouldn't have gotten fertilized, unless it's just too early? It couldn't hurt to put them together again, some more.

The eggs are huge already, her belly is really bumpy. I will put her little boyfriend back in to be sure. She only had three viable looking eggs last year. She laid about ten eggs. Most were obvious slugs or mushy feeling. I didn't keep the mushy ones figuring they were infertile.

"Oh, she's 4 feet 4 inches long, and weighs 40.8 ounces, or 156 grams"

Yeah, the 40.8 ounces I believe, because that converts to 1.15 kilos, which is the same as 1,156 grams, or 2.55 lbs.

That goliath will spit out 156 gram babies for chrissakes!..LOL!!

Anyway, Like the other's mentioned, just put them together some more, and if you continue to see zero interest from her, or she keeps "tail-slapping" him away, it is a safe bet she is indeed gravid.

I weighed her in the clear plastic box so I could see the scale underneath, but I guess I missed reading a '1' on the grams.

Yeah, I'll put her back with the little boy some more times just to be sure. But I think she's a hussy!

The eggs are very visible bumps along her belly.

Yeah, 1000 grams got inadvertently forgotten about there, which is exactly 2.2046 lbs!..LOL!

should get quite an egg pile from that girl!
