After first shed, a must?

Ryan_Sikola Apr 04, 2011 10:26 PM

I brought my females out feb. 2 and some of my females haven't even gone blue yet.

My pairs are restless and I was wondering if anyone here pairs theirs up before the first post-brumation shed?

I've never had it where they shed, breed, and then shed again and lay eggs. It's always, eat a few times just after waking up, breed like crazy...eat like crazy. Then ovulate, then go into shed, and then lay eggs. Very different from my cornsnakes that do follow the shed, breed, shed again and then lay eggs scenario that colubrids are supposedly supposed to follow...

But please let me state that I am NOT the expert on breeding Pits! Spotty at best really for me. Not sure yet why that is. I feel my temps are right...

Thanks for the replies, it helped. I just had a gut feeling that it was time but I always follow the "colubrid rule"

I guess it will be a couple shed before eggs this way:

ANERY x MCGURTY

I have to deal with Bechtel strain and probably applegate when I cross the babies back to eachother in 3-4 years haha thats a ways away, but hey whats the worse that can happen, hybinos or double albinos.

I never go by shed. I have had females go 3 months before a shed and by then you can miss the female ovulation.

I use a time scheduled. Every species and sub-species have different scheaduals.

What speices are working with?

Hi Ryan

I notice my annectan's usually bred in between weeks 8-12 after warming them up.

I wasn't very successful at breeding Annectans for my first couple years. A successful old timer annectan breeder gave some good advice. House your SD's breeder into group, even several males in same group. Keep them lean, and not obese. Only separating them for feeding and then right back together. I even added moisture hide boxes for them. He told me he housed his snakes together year round even hibernation. His method worked well for me and still does.
One thing I did different was after the females gravid and the breeding season was over I went back to housing them individually.

My pine's first shed of the year is always pre-lay. I never wait for a shed to put them together. Not sure if it is all pits but with NA pines shedding does not indicate breeding season.
