post brumation shed

john dhont Apr 05, 2011 12:16 PM

My female hognose is already 6 weeks out of hibernation but still did not shed.
I wanted to wait to introduce her to the male until she shed.
Should I realy wait after that shed or introduce or put the male with her already?

introduce them regularly. mine have already bred and my female hasn't shed even now. her next shed will be her pre-laying shed.so you really shouldn't rely on shedding as a signal when it comes to hognoses. it is reliable for cornsnakes but these aren't cornsnakes and hogs don't shed as often. I introduced mine as soon as the female had almost fully digested her most recent meal and removed him in 1-3 days to feed her and start the process again until i saw that they had locked up.

Waiting for a shed is not needed and could cause you to miss the females ovulation... My pairs get introduced a couple of days out of brumation and I keep reintroducing until I know for certain that the pairing was successful...

Thx Greg, but I'm affraid that what you wrote is just happening right now. When I came from my job and looked at the female I had the impression that she is just ovulating. I've put the male with her but I'm affraid that will be too late now.
