Daytona and Trade Shows of our Hobby

perfectpredators Apr 07, 2011 02:22 PM

Ive been noticing a lot of down talk lately about Daytona and trade shows in general and I just want to give my 2 cents if you guys dont mind. We (boa keepers) are a small group, within the small group of what is known as Herpetoculturists or Herpers. We need to unite and be supportive and stop with all the hissy fitting about conditions of cities and what not. Theres no argument that Daytona Beach is no Monaco but come one guys, Its a gorgeous Facitlity where the show is held, Marble Floors, 30 foot ceiling, the Hotel is a Hilton and a very very nice one, I read some peoples reactions and it sounds like we're staying in a flea bag two hump motel. Plus they're putting up with tens of thousands of reptiles and arachnids and a quirky crowd like us, we should be thankful they havent given us the boot! We need them more than they need us, that you can take to the bank. If it was a Ritz Carlton no one would want to pay the room rate anyway so whats all the moaning about??? for $125 overlooking the OCEAN?!?!? For those whove never been there and read whats being written they'll think its backed up to a train track with junkies and hookers at every turn. So everyone out there know the views of the sunrise are amazing, theres a quaint mall with middle to high end restaurants and shops, including my favorite a Starbucs, theres a fun water park, awesome pool area with full bar and restaurant outside, theres a fishing peer and tons of HERPS which is what we're there for. You wanna do more drive 30-45 minutes and go to Orlando. Or hang out and have a good time with the people you only see on forums or phone calls the rest of the year. Good grief Ive staid in straw huts in the Northern Amazon, fighting of Dengue disease carrying mosquitos and malaria, without plumbing or electricity for days on end just to see some of the beloved animals we will see in Daytona in a hugely cozy environment and enjoyed every second, am I the only one seeing this?!?!

Our hobby is in DEEP DEEP DEEP TROUBLE and we're sitting around whining, no wonder the USFWS is taking a whack us, they see us as a group that cant get organized enough to figh back perhaps? Thank God for Andrew Wyatt, Jeff Ronne, Warren Booth and the many DIE HARDS that have come to our rescue.

By the way Im bringing the cheese to Daytona this year so everyone can have with their whine. If it were Harley Davidson driving bikers or Nascar fans, they'd put up with Daytona if it meant sleeping on rocks, and thats why no one is messing with their hobby. We need to be strong and support our hobby cause the sand in the clock is running low, way too low to be behaving the way we are. Im embarrassed right now of my fellow hobbyists. Im reading a book right now called Stolen World and they're taking a whack at our way of life through the book media too. its all very frustrating how the outside world is picking fights with us and from within we are crumbling. I would like to know if those out there complaining took the same time they invested to complain and clicked donate now to USARK?? WE ARE UNDER SIEGE!!! WAKE UP EVERYONE !!!!!

Do what you will but I say show up to Daytona and as many shows as possible with a big smile, buy some animals, buy some shirts and Herp equipment, books, also remember to bid on some stuff in the auction to benefit USARK, then lift up your skirt check for stones and donate some real money $100 or more to USARK and enjoy yourself cause when its gone you are ALL GOING TO MISS IT, even the cry babies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I couldnt agree more, the ugly side of our hobby is we are always looking to up the anty, and just moving on. Whether it is a new morph, brighter color, ladder tail......, and I love that about our industry, but we seem to push aside everything else for the next best thing. Daytona (Orlando) is where it all started for most of us who have been around for a few years. New shows are great , and I hope more new quality shows pop up. The birth place of our hobby is in Florida ! By the way Manny two hump hotels are now just one hump hotels for me. LOL

Daytona great thoughts Manny, we definitely need to ban together and become a tighter nit group
so we can keep what is important to us our Boas and other reptiles !

I'm a Bronze member at this point

I'll be kicking a bump . . . . . . . . funds are needed by USARK to fight the good fight !

My favorite part, besides the show and seeing all the incredible animals within..... is the friday night before, when everybody gathers downstairs in the bar area and has drinks and just hangs out. As you said, this is an opportunity to hang out and talk in person with all the people we chat with through the forums and e-mail year round, and it's an opportunity to meet new people over a drink, in the OUTDOOR PATIO OVERLOOKING THE OCEAN!

Daytona may not be Hollywood, but it's the environment that's more important than the surroundings. What's important is not the habitat where in, but rather the REASON we are there. It's a hobby we all love, spend a lot of time and effort with, and it's a great opportunity to enjoy that hobby that we all have in common. I love my annual trip to Daytona, it's my yearly superbowl that I will continue going to until I'm no longer allowed.

As i mentioned below in one of the other threads on this subject, i had an absolute blast last year at Daytona. Yes it was a down year for the show, especially if you are a boa enthusiast, but it was great meeting and spending time with you (Manny), Jeff Ronne and Dr Warren Booth. The time spent over dinner talking about future breeding plans and dreaming of the things to come. To me the relationships and time spent with people as passionate about there boas as i am is priceless. I will also mention that the USARK auction was very cool and there were a lot of people there in support of a wonderful cause.

I try to be as positive as possible in every situation so with that being said i think it is sad that more of the "Big Name" breeders have elected not to go to Daytona. There are many of them that have made plenty of money there in the past and have many customers that would love to sit and talk to them about their collections, future breedings, etc... To me that is just smart business and i believe that to be part of keeping customers. I am one the ones that spend thousands of dollars at that show ever year and the most enjoyable to me is the time spent in fellowship with people mentioned above and vendors like the Burks (thanks for continuing to make the trip down) and the USARK crew (thank you for your continued fighting)

I hope that those of you on this forum and others will make your way to Daytona and all the other shows, that you can get, to help support this hobby / business. Also get involved in our fight with your time or money and if possible both. There are many of us that love our animals and want to be able to continue to enjoy our collections for a lifetime.

Thank you for allowing me to express my opinions and i hope there there others out there that feel the same way.

Lucas

Trade Shows never get old for me ... form the original shows in Millersport, Ohio (loved the hot dogs served by the vets ... they went great with the Cold Beer in the pop machines) to the current Mega Shows (Orlando-to-Daytona and the NARBE-Tinley Park).

Every year I offer my wife a change from Daytona, but she opts to stay at the Daytona Hiltion ... great price for an ocean front room ... and we know all the best dining places from Jacksonville down to Ft. Lauderdale. And yes, almost every year I drag her along to Tinley Park (on her birthday, no less).

Heck, I like it all ... boas, pythons, lizards, turtles & totoises ... drinking beer and chatting at oceanside ... what's not to like?

Its a mini whos who of our hobby which replied to my post and I really feel better. Thank you everyone that commented as I had to get what I said off my chest. If anyone got offended maybe they need to check themselves- no apologies here.

For the first time in my life I am worried that my 2 boys will not have the opportunity to raise boas and care for these magnificent animals because someone else wants to dictate how others should live their life. At this point, we're dealing with animals produced in peoples basements so extinction consequences can been ruled out, now it it time for dept. of interiors accross the globe to concentrate on whats going on in their forests and not our basements. I am for strict rules of release or neglect, but not even for a second will i support any banning of any kind.

We are going to get out of our hobby, our trade shows and local events what we put into them. If we show up, spend money, offer our offspring, network, meet and make relationships, support good causes and become a united front- we will exist forever. if we fracture, divide, complain and reminisce on what once was we will lose the opportunity we have right now to make this hobby better than it ever was, and have NOW be our "good old days" better yet our better than ever future! My sons are 3 and 2 and I would love for them to have the chance I had to raise, care and breed these animals, its been very rewarding to me on so many levels. Just cause they dont have a furry coat, nor the ability to sit and give you a paw, does it mean we cannot enjoy their company and be it as rewarding. Animals and man have co-existed for millenia, and similar relationships to ours with our boas. How this is news to the USFWS or something out of the ordinary is beyond me.

Here's me in 1982, this picture was taken at the Miami Serpentarium where I was fortunate enough to go at least once a month and watch Bill Haast, whos now 100 years old btw, and still alive and kickin'. On this October 1982 day someone from Mr. Hasst staff placed this Colombian Rainbow Boa on my neck so my parents could snap this photo, they had no idea what they just started, to that point my passion was lizards, turtles and tortoises, but boy did that ever change and the rest is history.......

Well said! All of it was well said, but this perspective is the key to our future.

Agreed!
I've always dreamed of going to the Daytona show. Hope it's still around when I have time and money to make the trip.

Thats awesome! Its the most important show for no other reason that It springboardrd the hobby and was created by and for the hobby. It was the one that made it all happen. All the rest followed, with improvements here and there and are important to visit too but you must take your hat off to the original. I'll go till there's 1 table and it's me and wayne hill and no one else...
