Monitor breeding?

geckotribe Apr 07, 2011 07:37 PM

I have breed just bout everything but moniotors and I REALLY want to, I had these species in mind for breeding
Savannahs
Timors
Ackie
But what do I know? I know how to breed tegus and thats it. Ive had monitors but never breed.
Are these good species to start out with? Is their easier speacies to go with in terms on monitors
More so is there a market for CBB monitors like this like does anyone even want to buy a CBB timor or Sav or anything its suck to be stuck with the babies

Ackies would be be the best and easiest to breed. Not to mention they will make you more money than the others.

Don't yu have to feed them a lot, so they'll breed better? Don't they have high metabolism, or something? Reptiles in the wild breed best when food is plentiful, don't they?

I know you feed pregnant girls a bit more. Still I want to breed something that at least babaies will sell
Whether it be ackies or Water monitors I just want somethinf that has been breed or can be breed and that has a market. Its suck to be stuck with babies that wont stay baby for long

You might as well get a real job, too, if you want to breed them. They eat a lot from what I hear. Even my bearded dragons ate quite a bit growing up. They're appetite will taper off as they get older, but if they are really hungry, they will eat, especially during the hot months. That's why a lot of people order rodents online in bulks to save money.

And, Ackies probably are more sought after on the market.... Cape white throat...I think that's they name of it. They're a little smaller than the regulars, but I like them better.

my advice to you is to find a species of monitor that YOU are interested in working with and work with breeding that species. Making money breeding monitors of any species is tough as it is with a lot of species of reptiles.
You can always sell truly captive bred monitors but some of the species like savanahs are hard to sell at too much of a price increase over the huge wild caught market.
On the other hand if you started breeding ackies you can sell them but you will be competing with people who have been doing so for a long time.
Either scenario is fine if you are working with a species you enjoy working with as you can always sell your babies based on your own positive experience with the species and you won't mind the adversities you face with the tough market that is out there.
the best way too make money with monitors or any other reptile is to forget about them and go to college and become a doctor or lawyer or something else that earns a paycheck. then you can keep whatever you want and not worry about making money off of it, and you might even make enough money to feed the waters you are considering breeding lol.
On a quite serious note waters are a great species of monitor to work with, I love them dearly and have worked with them for many years, However if you have little or no experience with monitors I would strongly suggest you start with something much much smaller.

id like to figure out a way to breed a strain of purely high green melinus's, but the odds of me lucking out and getting another monitor as green as mine is [bleep] to non, but goodluck breeding!!!!
