why did my snakes stop eating?

jlane Apr 07, 2011 09:50 PM

I have six thayeri two 09 females and four 10, two males two females. Recently one of my 09 females stopped eating and one of my 10 males. One 10 female is eating but not as well as she was. The other three seem uneffected. At first I thought it was a heating problem. Because I had other cages staked on top of the others, thought the cages were getting too hot from the pads. But now I've corrected that and still not eating. Both act hungry but won't take the food. The only thing I can think of is I did change suppliers of my mice recently. Could this be the problem? I did however manage to get them to take one meal of live, but still they didn't eat like they used to.

If it is practical maybe order a small order of mice from the old supplier, to at least rule out the change in suppliers of your mice. This may sound silly, but if the snakes liked the old supplier's mice better, you could maybe scent the new mice with the old ones. Otherwise just feed live so at least they are eating something.

They might be getting ready to shed, some Thayeri are weired about eating before their shed time.

I would agree but the female had just come out of shed and the male about two weeks earlier.

I thaw my mice out by soaking them in warm water, then rinse real well. You might give that a try. Or just try to feed next week.
Good luck, Bob B.

critter keeper boxes work real well to soak, wash and drain water from mice.

Hi,

Seasonal changes often cause that. It is usually no big deal if you don't see any outward symptoms. Don't forget, even yearlings can be cycling for breeding if they are well grown. That first real shot of hormones can knock their feeding off kilter for a while. Just keep 'em stable and they should snap back in a short time. Good luck.
