First 2011 Pale Milk Snake eggs!!!

zonatahunt Apr 11, 2011 02:26 PM

Hey all,

I have a gorgeous first-time breeder Big Horn Co., MT, pale milk snake that threw six perfect eggs yesterday. I bred her to a 17-inch 2009 male...who did great! Here she is:

That's great!
You have eggs and my Hondos haven't bred yet! Crazy!
How big is the female?
Congrats!

Rusty,

The female is about 22 inches. She eats like a champ for me and was swollen like a water balloon. It's funny though, just like i've noticed with other lampropeltines, she lost a lot of the vividness associated with her red during the whole reproductive process. Before she was gravid she had much less tipping in her red, and her red was very bright. Now it's much duller with a lot of tipping. I have zonata that are mere shells of their former selves with respect to color after being bred two to three seasons in a row.

I've seen the same thing happen with AZ Mt. Kings.

The males do it as well (for the AZ) during the winter they dull up, but just after breeding time they seem to bloom!

Very interesting observations sir!

Way nice, Mitch! I got your message last night. I am out of town for work, but will try to call you later. I will say that Missoula, MT has some stellar beers...

Congrats!

Joe,

This isn't even my first clutch; that came on March 27th! It's funny, I kept her on the coldest warm spot on that rack (if that made any sense!!). Hasta bro.

Excellent Mitch, those Bighorns are a special project to me, and I'm glad to see they produced so well for you.
Don't forget to post the neonates, I'd love to see them after they're out.
