compasscreek Sep 28, 2003 09:43 PM

currently i have a 6 month old male panther and dust his crickets like this:

monday and thursday- repcal herptivite multivitamin
wednesday and saturday- minerall calcuim with trace minerals
tuesday and friday- repcal calcium with D3

would you supplememnt females any different?

i can tell you that i wouldn't use the vitamin supps that often, on a cham that old. more like once a week, to every other week. over supplementation could be much worse.

At the age of 6 months, I cut back on supplementation to a multivitamin only once a week and D3 only once a week. A little extra calcium never hurt anyone, but make sure you dust everything VERY lightly. You can dust often, but keep it very light. You should barely even be able to see it on the insect. At 6 months, I usually cut back feeding a little bit, maybe skipping about 2 days a week, and at about a year I'm skipping 3 days a week. I've been working on a website and I just wrote down the whole supplementation article yesterday. Define adult.... At 6 months, they're sexually mature, but they will grow until about 18 months (panthers). Where did you get that schedule from? Sounds kinda familiar to mine. I've told a few people the way I do it. Don't remember who. Did you ever make it to Exotic Pets? What did you think? Females should be supplemented and fed similar to males unless they're breeding. If gravid, they should be fed similar to your schedule. Keep D3 and multivitamin twice a week and spread the 2 days out (like you've done). Keep them on this schedule for a week or two after laying to help them recover. Good luck.

i got that schedule from kammerflage kreation's care sheet when i got my guy. i asked "what is an adult?" becuase on the shet it mentions adults get a reduced shcedule but don't specify what age is considered adult. i'm be changing my supplementation TOMARROW! the last thing i want is to make him sick..especially since i'm looking for a girl for him. i never made it to exotic pets. i got to my brother house in henerson and was telling him about my chameleon and showing him pictures and he tells me he knows where there are desert "turtles"that's what he called them lol). so we headed out to find one. sure enough we found one, but left it there. late saturday night we trying cruising for snakes out around jean only find one 2 ft. rattler. i spent ALOT of time in the truck yesterday but it beat sitting at home! lol

Male panther chameleon or adult female (non-breeding) 6 months and up:
Monday- Insects with no supplements. Tuesday- Rep Cal Calcium with D3. Thursday- Herptivite Multivitamin. Saturday- MinerAll O. Wednesday, Friday and Sunday they don't get food. This keeps them healthy and keeps them from getting overweight since they are no longer growing rapidly. It also helps them to be excited about eating, and they won't get tired of the usual food insects.

Ok, that was from my website... (not done yet), but that's what I do from 6 months up. If you want, you could add one day with food but no supplements, so he's not eating 2 days a week.

he just turned 6 months old this weekend. when i first got him at 3 months i was feeding him 7-8 crickets a day 7 days a week. at 5 months old i cut that back to 5 crickets a day 7 days a week. he is alot eager to feed now. do i need to feed him less then this? i don't want to starve him but i don't want complications from feeding him too much.

I think the last thing you should worry about is starvng him... In the wild I'd be suprised if they ate more than 2 or 3 insects a day. Plus, they're probably burning alot more energy there than they are in captivity. Your schedule is fine. I cut mine back a bit mostly because I like to keep them excited to feed. It also helps in maintenance when I only have to feed HALF of my chameleons every other day instead of all 11 of them every day. Crickets do get expensive, believe me. I have been working on superworms and roaches more lately to save a little cash. Seems like I order crix every Monday. I feed my adult males (7-8 months and up) probably 5-7 crickets every other day or maybe 3-5 supers, or a combination of the 2. If feeding them every other day, feed them whatever they'll eat on those days. Adult males seem to cut back alot on their food intake. I have young males that will eat all day long anything I put in, but adult males get bored quickly. Maybe just lazy I dunno.

I'm kinda on the other side of town from Henderson. What direction did you go to get desert tortoises? My friend has a bunch he's had forever (most are older than him) and they have babies every year. He just gave me 2 of the babies. They're cool. Only about 3 months old now. Kinda north of town out in the desert, there's a road that if you drive on at night, you'll see all sorts of rattlers cause they go on the road where it's warm.
