What the future holds....

KcTrader Apr 12, 2011 11:53 PM

Mike Fedzen, brought up a good point in the previous thread. What timeline do you think we have in this hobby for selling snakes? Do you think we have 20 plus years until the government takes all of our rights away?

How about this, If in 20 yrs there was only one state left that you could own a snake in, would you move there? Just so you were able to own and keep a childhood passion?

I think that the smaller snakes are *probably* fairly safe at least on a national level. States and cities are prone to idiocy regarding native animals so I can't promise there. I'm not sure about the larger boids though. If Salazar has to leave before reaming us, our future may look brighter.

Funny thing you bring this up. I had a dream quite a few years ago, that snakes were no longer legal to own or sell. In my dream I had a hidden room with a false wall that would open up, and I remember showing my hidden stash of snakes to a good friend who was interested in buying some. Who know what the future really holds? Keeping our snakes may be the least of our worries, if we keep merging with the Global plan and dream of John Lennon. Imagine there's no country.......no possessions...

Nice dream Jorge, hopefully we never get to that point...But hey it is always possible. Look at all the rights the people gave up in the "Patriot Act". I think I would leave to another state, or country to keep what I like...I moved from NY to FL after a 2 week vacation here...Only because I thought it was great I could fish all year long....

I tend to take this State for granted, but it is a herpers dream! I the spring I always keep snake bags in my car, cause I see snakes on the way to work almost daily! I don't see any Kings, but I have a collection of local Corn snakes that I caught almost exclusively on my way to work, lol. I did get some from relatives that found them also, and I have caught a couple while driving my big rig at night ha ha. I even have one little female corn I found at a Plant where I get loaded every night. My truck get's loaded, not me, lol. Shoot I made a list one time of all the herps I've seen just in my yard and it was quite impressive. The coolest snake I see occassionally is indigos! How cool is that? I dreamed of owning an Indigo my whole life, now I see them in my yard and can't have it. What a twist! Oh well, I've been toying with the Ideah of getting some Cribos someday, I'm just not ready yet.

This is my ultimate dream, lol! I always dream about coming across an albino Indigo. My wife called me one day on the cell phine and said she saw a white snake on our septic tank. I was half way to work and did a 180 in the middle of the road and sped back to see but it was gone! She doesn't know what kind it was, she just knows it was white. She said if she had to guess she would guess a hognose? How much do you think a white Indigo would go for?

I've seen the pieds but not the super. Is it just more white, less black than a regular pied?

And they and a handful of other larger colubrids are on my definite someday maybe list.

And...If you breed a normal pied pair together you will get Super pieds.......Or a het pair as well.....that is the cheapest route.....

I think it would be cool to produce normals, pieds and supers all in one clutch.......

But I need way more room for a project like that......And more time to clean their messes up.......lol

Im pretty sure the Massurana are considered venomous here in florida, and a hot liscence is not too easy to get anymore. Heck even some Hog nose are classified as Venomous!

Considering baby Florida Indigos go for around $1000 to $1500, and a large adult can go for upwards of $3000, My guess would be that many of the Drymarchon connossiures that are around would easily pay $30,000 to $50,000 or more for a nice white amel or leucistic without even batting an eyelash. Pending Florida laws with proper permits could be a big obstact though for many, especially in Florida and Georgia.

Mussurana are really cool, but in my opinion, they are nowhere NEAR revered as the noble Florida Indigo!..

Heck, that amel Spilotes pullatus that Ben S. had, he was asking 10K..*shrug"

Our laws on Texas Indigos are crazy.....they are one of the most common snakes in South Texas but they are protected cuz some "good ole boy" law maker found out they eat rattlers...LOL

Yes...Indigos are more impressive than Mussurana for sure...Even the big ole Texas ones.......

It's interesting how there is a gap in between their ranges...The Eastern Indigo and the Texas Indigo.......

"It's interesting how there is a gap in between their ranges...The Eastern Indigo and the Texas Indigo"

I know what ya mean, it is pretty strange that there is a mid-range between them where neither one resides.

It's sort of that way on a much smaller scale here in Florida with the L.c.rhombomaculata, and the SFMK(occipitolineata). There seems to be a mid-gap in the center of the state with neither as well. Pretty weird, because the terrain is basically identical for the most part.

Range maps were made to be broken. I have broken them many times.

It just takes a little studying of the target species and area. Then go out and find one.

I was going to say. Good luck trying to prove you found one out of the range extension. It seems to be a pattern around here that people won't beleive you.

It also is a problem with getting it properly documented unless you have a "Dr." before your name or are working directly with a University. Bringing a specimene (alive or pickled) just doesn't seem to fly.

LOL! This is a good fantasy question. But of course nobody knows the answer.

There are states which are very much against regulating anything and then there are states which like to regulate everything. Maybe the last stronghold will be a state like Kalifornia which seems to be the worst state now. But since they like to regulate everything under their control, they might be the last stronghold for keeping and selling snakes as long as it is under their watchful eye.

A couple other guesses would be states like Alabama which has a minset of reliving the cival war and are more for living free and they hate snakes (basically Alabama has dumbasses with low income level). Or it might be the state where the most large herpetologists live and gather like Texas.

There is power where more herpetologists gather. So texas has that core of of people that are not as divided (or don't care like Florida).

or maybe it will be a state like Wyoming (I think it is Wyoming) which is gathering arms and are poised for a civil revolt?

Bottom line house divided cannot stand. We have only two parties to vote. Choose which is bets and don't sell out. We all know which party that is.

Another thing I might mention is the libertarian party...which almost everyone i talk to agrees is the best and is such a pipe dream for americans they will never vote. It all comes down to money and with our current residential party-he has a very large war chest and will probably win this next election because of that.

Too bad the masses don't think the way you do. because everybody i talk to wishes for the libertarian party (btw for those that don't know. Libertarian has nothing to do with being liberal)

But most feel it is a waste of a vote. Or that it is a vote taken away from the 2 main parties...whichever is the worst of the one has to decide upon.

Sad but true.

I wish evrybody would just vote libertarian as that is what THE PEOPLE want. It is an amazing party and so radical that most think it is some pipe dream. What people forgot is this gov't is syill about "WE THE PEOPLE" "FOR THE PEOPLE".

i AM ALL FOR LESS GOV'T. Less spending. Just legalizing marijoana would let half the folks out of prison freeing tax dollars. Then by legalizing marijuana gov't will make more money from the tax sales.

Don't get me started there is so much positive to this party . But I swear if it ever came close to people voting for it, it would be because of a cival war or someone just bombed the heck out of us. There just is not enough money to advertise this party.

I heard global warming was gonna kill us all off at the end of 2012??

Hopefully the government doesn't step in anymore on the reptile business, aren't big boas and pythons illegal to keep in a lot more places now? I plan on keeping kingsnakes and milk snakes for as long as I'm walking around this earth.
