.1 Yellowbelly ~ what to breed her with?

Paige69 Apr 13, 2011 02:18 PM

Hi,

I have a 09 yellowbelly girl that is becoming a tank (920 grams a few days ago and took a medium rat last night) so I am trying to line up what I will breed her to next season.

I have the following males, and would love some input!!!

Blackback Pewter, Enchi, Super Pastel, Lesser

Or any other ideas? Are Pewter Yellowbellies distinctive?

V/R Paige

I also have a 09 female yellowbelly around 1000 grams. What a small world! i am breeding her to a pastel next season. I thnk that you should go with the super pastel because a while back somebody posted a picture of BHB's super pastel yellowbelly and it was just glowing with purple blushing.

Those would all be great choices and if you like the YB Pastel you could get that with either your Pewter or your Super Pastel. Keep one thing in mind, If you use the Pewter you still have a chance of getting Normals but if you use the SuperPastel you will not get any Normals. You would get Pastels and Pastel YB's and those are a great combo and would be a really goo thing to have in your breeding arsenal a little bit down the road. Good luck with her.

I would rotate the Lesser, Enchi, and Super Pastel

It's playing the odds really...

I'm surprised that no one really seemed to keen on you trying to get the pewter YB. Use a double to make a triple, a triple to make a quad etc...Half of the babies should be pastel, Half should be cinnamon, and half should be YB. Sure, you can still get a normal BUT! you will be able to get pastels, YBs, Cinnies, pastel YBs, YB Cinnies, Pewters, PEWTER YB and... normals.

A Pewter YB male is a weapon with a rack of normals. Using the pewter male you are maximizing your output IMO. That leads to more trading power, more buying power, and a genetically awesome breeder... if you can get a male.

go for the triple!

What I am trying this year.....

I took a male Yellow Belly to what I think is a Het Red Axanthic female, she ovulated and shed so eggs due in the next 20 days. The only reason I did it I could not find any Yellow Belly Het Red Axanthincs anywhere.

If someone has seen it please let me know. Send pics or links.

I hope I get some funky paint jobs out of it. I will post pics when they hatch but most likely I will not sell any.

Try to find the "UNKNOWN" and that is the whole idea. Be the first to see the creation and not pictures of it.

Good luck and may the "Snake Gods" bless you with healthy babies.

The Yellowbelly gene is so subtle (unless of course you have a Spector) so it is something I needed some input on for sure.

Good Luck to Everyone in getting some Amazing clutches!!!!

The Yellow Belly is not a subtle morph...easy to tell the difference. They look nothing like a normal.
I could drop my male in a tub of 100 normals...no 1000 normals and ask anyone who knows nothing about snakes to find the one that looks different and they would have no problem unless the were blind.
Not wanting to argue with you in any shape or form but a true Yellow Belly has nothing subtle about it.
Are you sure you have a true Yellow Belly? Got pics?

SOME yellowbellies are subtle. I've seen yellowbellies from Ivory sires (so they were definitely YB's) that I couldn't tell were YB's.

Then there are some that just scream YB.

Mine are screaming yellowbellies!! Got them from Brian 480 Pythons but that doesn't mean they are not subtle to a casual observer. I am sure that people with a trained eye or a nice attention to detail can easily pick them out. I am going to take a pick of my big girl. : )

I'll have to take an updated belly shot of my CH male and female.
The male...oh man...he started out a little subtle on his stomach...now at 500 grams it's ridiculous.

The female as well.

I love YB's. Totally underrated in my opinion.

I agree that they aren't subtle. My YB female is smoking hot and has blushing all the way up and down her sides. She even has a part that the blushing goes all the way around her. They can be dull at hatch, but after a few sheds they are gorgeous. I can't wait untill next year to breed to my friends pastel which is also very pretty. I think i was lucky in getting this specif one because i was at a show and i went to a table and they had like 4 yellowbelly females and i chose the prettiest one.

jaymiller242 Apr 14, 2011 01:18 AM

After thinking about the YB and what to breed her to and confiring with a snake god(a good friend of mine)we both decided that she would be great with any of your mentioned males but if you were to put her with your Pewter your chances of hitting the triple morph which would be charming would be 1 in 8. That is the same odds you have using that pairing of making the dreaded Normal...lol.

Yeah, but odds mean nothing. You could get 8 eggs and ALL triple morphs.

you have as much chance of hitting all normals on that pairing as you do getting all triples. The fact is if you are trying to produce brownish silver snakes with flames put it with the pewter if you want a bright yellow snake with flames put it with the super pastel or if you want some screaming flamed out lessers put it with the lesser. If that was my snake I'd sell the super pastel, pewter and lesser and buy a specter male. The fact is we can all tell you what we would do but have no idea what your goals are or your likes so therefore our opinions are really useless.

I find all of your opinions interesting and I take them into consideration. I may not agree with some but it makes me think about what I should do with her. I wouldn't ask if I was just going to totally disregard them.

As a matter of fact I am going to look up Lesser Yellowbelly today. I haven't seen one yet. I am at work and it blocks quite a few pictures so when I hear you all ooohhing and aaaahing over them I have to look them up on my little phone until I get home.

If I did get a spector male what does it look like for producing a superstripe? 1 in 8? She is a 900 gram girl so I know I will only get a few eggs from her when I breed her this fall. Thanks, Paige

I disagree because with you because I wouldn't ask for opinions if I was just going to disregard all of your opinions. You all give me ideas that I hadn't thought of or haven't seen yet.

I view this site from work and most pictures are blocked and I can only view them on my small phone until I get home from work. When I see you all ahhhing and oooohing over a picture I know I have to see it!!

As a matter of fact I am going to look at a lesser yellowbelly today based on input from a member here. And I am excited to see what it looks like!!

Say I did get a Spector male - what is the chance I would get a Superstripe? 1 in 4? 1 in 8? My female will be a brand new breeder so I am thinking I will be lucky to get 4 eggs? Is that a fair assessment?

Thanks for all of your time and input!!! Paige

1 in 4, but yet again that is just the statistical odds. You could get all superstripes. You could get all spectres. You could get all YB's. You could get all normals.

It's more chance and luck than hard statistical odds.

When I say our opinions are useless in this situation, what I'm referring to is that we have no idea of what other snakes are in your racks that will be able to breed in the next 2 years and we also have no idea of what other snakes you are planning on buying in the next year or two. Those two facts are huge contributing factors on what you would pair an animal up with. For instance I've seen a few yb pewters and was not thrilled with them much at all, but if you had a female specter in the rack or were planning on adding the specter gene to your collection over the next year or two then the pewter yb might be a good choice if you wanted to make pewter super stripes. You must remember, just because an animal has X amount of genes in it does not mean it is more valuable, because someone has to want to buy that from you or it has to be able to fit into your breeding plans. Too many people buy animals and then think of what to breed it to which is wrong. Think of what you want to produce then get the animals in which to achieve YOUR goal, you will be much happier and have alot less stress.

Happy Friday!!!

I don't stress over it because it is for fun and I enjoy my snakes. I did list my four males and no, not planning on adding any males for quite a while. Always have room for girls.

I also agree with the your theory on it being the snakes others want too, and that is why my lesser and enchi come into play at all. I just hadn't even considered a .1 yellowbelly into any breeding plans when I got them.

Only one is going to be able to breed this fall is why I brought up the one. While I like the superstripe (okay it is amazing to me as I have always like the striped snakes be it the corn or balls) I am not a huge fan of the Spector or Specter.

I really can't see anything special about it. Is there a Super Spector? Thanks for all your time and input, Paige

joshhutto Apr 15, 2011 04:23 PM

We should know this year if there is a super specter and I imagine there will be. As far as what the super will look like we can only guess. My line of thought goes since its a mutation on the same allele as the yellow belly gene and since alot of specters look similar to yb's I would think the super may be a kind of ivory looking animal just like the super "special" (crystal making animal but am not saying that the crystal maker is also a specter).

Now back to your original question. With where my breeding plans are going, I'd breed your yb female to either the lesser, super pastel or enchi in that order. I do plan on adding superstripe genes to my racks this year though.

I don't know for you and what everyone thinks (but would like to)

A 09 that is 920grams probably won't breed.
My 09 are bigger than that and I am not sure they will all be ready the next breeding season.

I have 2010 that are as big as your 2009 girl. I am pretty sure they won't be ready either, even if they have the weight cause they won't be mature.

So first, I wouldn't go buy a super male for them just yet. May be a 2011 for the 2013 season ?

Paige69 Apr 18, 2011 02:26 PM

Hi Watever,
Love that name btw.

The reason I mention she is a tank is because the girl is throwing down f/t'd medium rats. She is probably closer to 1020 grams then 920.

I am not buying any males for her as I already have my four males that I want for now. I was just curious as to what would give me some neat combos with the males I have already.

Good luck on getting your girl up to size. Mine might not make it but that is all in fun. V/R Paige
