Outreach with deppei

ALT Apr 14, 2011 11:29 AM

I’ve always found doing public outreach with reptiles to be extremely important (and fun!). Over the years, my hands-down favorite animals to use in programs have been my jani. Figured I’d share a few photos from some programs I’ve done. First two pictures are me, the rest are of program volunteers with my guys.

The Mexican species are amazing. I'm totally smitten by them and highly recommend them for anyone with the space to house them! The ontogenetic transformation they go through unreal; from tiny, dull tan and grey hatchlings that start out on pinkies to 6-7'long yellow/orange/black/red monsters that can handle up to large rats! They are a snake that continues to look better with every shed. In the recent photos, the big yellow guy is just beginning a shed cycle, and that's why he's not glowing. The other one (in the first photo as a 2 year old) had just shed that morning.

Thanks for sharing pictures of those very nice looking jani.
Think I've seen the pictures in the park before?

Ha! Probably. I stole them from my friend's blog Biological Ramblings(the hirsute dude in the last picture.) He's probably posted them around the internet on other forums as well.

Super cool post!!! Love the action and the snakes. Unfortunately my particular jani is a total spaz and wouldn't make a good outreach animal at all. But he is a looker.

Say, how tall is your hirsute friend? If he's 6ft. that snake must be around 7 or so eh? ...WOW! That is one impressive animal.

Hey thanks Monklet. Very nice jani you have there, and great photo too! My big guy is definitely 7', if not longer. I should try and get a measure on him one of these days. He's for sure one in a million, and I've had him almost half my life. The nose rub scar happened in the care of a pet-sitter my first year of college (2001) when I couldn't have animals in the dorms.

The temperaments of my jani range from totally mellow and wonderful to completely mental. It's cool how they're all have individual "personalities". Much more fun than those scaly paperweight ambush predator species like boas and ball pythons

If he won't stand still to be measured, you can get good measurements with "aerial" photo(s) on something like a grid of tiles w/ known (relatively precise) dimensions. You can look around on the web for software to then measure the length of that big yellow curve in the photo (I had an R script that did this - if I get it working again I'll let you know).
