Thayeri Trio

Jlassiter Apr 15, 2011 06:13 PM

This 1.2 have been together since October.....This is the only true communal housing project I have at the moment.
They live in an Applegate Enclosure so I place prey items in each drawer and scattered above ground.....Sometimes I do place caps over the tunnels so that they are separated during feeding though but I haven't done that since at least 6 or so feedings ago.....

Kinda interesting they all wanted to be in the water bowl at once.....I would think that they are telling me that it is too dry in their enclosure but they have a drawer full of damp moss.....So that isn't the reason.....

Why do you all think they are in the water bowl?....None are in shed....None are drinking........

I'm just now putting some of my animals together to breed....
Apalachicola kings, SFMK, moles, mex mex, nigrita, etc.
May not even breed thayeri anymore....couldn't give 'em away last year....some of the best I've had too....
ah well, a year off is o.k. by me..

LOL.....
Cool Mark...You know I will come by your table and check out your mex mex this year......I am beginning to like SFMK and other calligaster more and more......But I don't know if I want any more projects.........

And....As for thayeri.....It seems if you aren't in the "mexicana-head circle/niche" they are hard to sell at a decent price..........But they are still fun to see what emerges from the eggs.....

BTW....that 2009 Splitbanded female I got from you will go next year.....She has a real light ground color and every saddle is split with the ground color....

Here's a picture with some others for comparison....She's the lightest one in the pic.....

The only explanation I could think of is its uncomfortably hot in your house, but I'm sure you would have figured that out on your own. My Cal kings do that on very hot days in summer, not all, but a lot do. I've kept several pairs of Cal kings together over the years, year round, and it seems most of the time they prefer to lay with each other. Back then I never used to heat the cages, so I don't think it was conditions in the cage. I could see why if they were in the hide together, but they would often stay together outside the hide. Call it bonding or whatever, I don't know. I always assumed the liked each other. lol Have you noticed that as well? Currently I keep everything separated. Nice looking snakes, btw.

Thanks Ross but it is 72F in my snake room and the other 137 snakes are not soaking in their water bowls......

I can't explain it but I am surely observing them all the time....They like to hang out with each other......Maybe they get lonely all alone....I dunno....lol

You didn't just happen to change the water in that bowl, did you? A lot of times I kings will go in the water right after its changed. Other than that, the explanation I can think of is one will start clouding up in about a week and started soaking early. Maybe the other fallowed it in. Are any of them due to shed? Sorry if this was already mentioned.

two of them just finished shedding this week.......the other doesn't seem to be going into a shed cycle, but may soon......

The water was refreshed yesterday....Could be something.....they usually go crap in fresh water.....LOL

Dryness would have been my guess too.
Bouyancy after a good meal?
Desiring humidity less than moss/more than cage air?
Elevated humididty and enjoying the light?
Trying to hint to the human that a little Jacuzzi would be nice?

I think your third idea best explains it.......

Or maybe the last...LOL

Thanks Bob.....

Nice trio John! I have a trio that have been together for over 2 years. I sometimes see the females dash into the water bowl to escape the advances of the male.

The darker female is pure the red male is 50% Ruthveni, and the lighter female is also 50%.

I've seen your trio before....You need some good bloodlines.....But they are all very nice looking snakes......

Plus....I haven't seen the male advance either one of the females......and I did not brumate these three because they are on the small side......They should go next year though......

Yeah i know, I don't know if I want to even continue with them? i may sell all or just keep the female, don't know yet? Oh I also kept 1.4 Sinaloan/Nelsons together for years, with no problems either, lol. I sold all those off though.
