off topic - need help with leopard gecko

paulbuckley Apr 17, 2011 10:53 AM

my nephew posted this in the leopard gecko forum, but there is very little traffic over there, and if he does not get some help, this little guy is possibly going to die...

for those who are going to say, "take it to a vet" - i know, and i agree. but it's an inlaw situation, and i can suggest but not force. a vet trip may very well happen, but as many of you know, good herp vets are hard to find and it's good to go in armed with some knowledge of the problem - i know nothing of leopard geckos and am a bit stumped on this one - so any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

eating all this week, plump, looks healthy in every other way. these 3 bumps, and a mucousy covering on the eye - looks like an infection to me that will get worse without treatment.

has anyone dealt with this sort of thing? is there an over the counter remedy?

I've seen something similar to this. It kinda sounds like several eye caps that have built up if so just soak him and use a Q tip to gently remove. This may take some time and he could have permanent damage to his eye. Can't be 100% but just my opinion on what it could be.
Good luck.

thanks jluna... not sure that explains the bumps which look like some sort of infection to me. apparently my nephew has tried soaking him, but i'm wondering whether something like a weak betadine solution might be needed.

and just as important - what caused the issue(s) in the first place. they are warm, well fed, and whenever i visit, the enclosure is clean. but obviously something went wrong.

Yeah, definately looks like an eye infection. Could be a bite if he was housed with other geckos.
Leos don't shed their eye-caps so don't go poking anything in there!!!
I have seen this before and have never known it to be fatal. As you said, a trip to the vet might help but they are so small that there is usually not much that can be done. Antibiotic creams are the usual vet prescription.
Standard reptile immune support (i.e. elevated temps & humidity) is the way I usually treat my Leos and I haven't lost one to an infection yet.
Best of Luck!
