Male or Female?

AnnabelLee Apr 20, 2011 03:00 PM

When I asked my local vet if my MBK was male or female, she said "We don't do that here" . . . and there aren't many breeders around, so I was hoping for some input based on the tale whether this is a male or a female.

Yeah, looks female.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone seems to agree on female

Have to agree with it's being a female, but not with shopping for a new vet.

She may have been unwilling to sex your snake with more definitive means than the shape of the tail... assuming probing was what both of you had in mind... things could potentially go wrong that might harm the snake... since probing is not needed for the health and well being of your snake why should she run the risk simply to satisfy your curiosity?

Not saying anything is wrong at all with wanting to know or being curious about it... everybody here wants to know the sex of their snakes after all ... just keep in mind the vet has no reason to risk harming what seems to be a perfectly healthy animal.

Thanks for the input Gerry

And I definitely get that aspect of the vet's rationale. It's just frustrating since it seems that no one in the area is willing to tell me and I'm not experienced enough to tell by the tail. (I'm looking toward breeding so ending up with two male or two female MBK's wouldn't be very useful to me) Looks like everyone agrees on female though.

Female. Shorter tail and the tail sort of indents just aft of the vent.

Male. Longer tail and a slight bulge just aft of vent.

I see this question frequently so always have these images on hand. Your snake looks like a female.

Not all veterinarians have much on hands experience with reptiles. You could look for another snake fancier in your area. Ask local pet stores. That is how I found my snake guy who has taught me how to sex my snakes.

I always find a side view useful, too, in sexing visually.

That's a female!

And what she really meant to say is...."we don't KNOW how to do that here"..LOL!

I would dump that vet and look for a knowledgeable reptile vet in your area in case you REALLY need one for something serious. If the vet can't even take two seconds to sex the snake, what good will she be for any major problem that arises with a snake that you have?.

The fact that she said that to you tells me she nows nothing about snakes to begin with.

it is a female.

20 don't ever go back to that vet. They either know nothing or are unwilling to help on a real simple thing.
