newbie breeding question

wbcrows Apr 21, 2011 07:44 PM

I'll apologize to start, but here's my question when breeding a normal that is het let
s say albino to a mojave, will the het have an effect or does it have to be bred to an albino or another het for albino....

The only way to bring out the recessive gene is to breed into something with the same recessive or visual gene.

If you breed a snake that is het for a recessive trait (such as albino or Pied)to one that does not have the gene the offspring will have a 50% chance of inheriting the gene from the het parent. This is because the het parent can pass either the mutated gene or the associated normal gene and the 'normal' parent can only pass the normal gene.
So in the example you gave you would get normals 50% possible het albino and mojaves 50% possible het albino.

Hope that helps you out.

thanks guys, I thought that was the case but I didn't want to assume. So would I be wrong thinking it's similar to cornsnake breeding?

No, you wouldn't be wrong to compare Balls to Corns. Genetics work the same in all creatures. If you have a grasp on Corn genetics you won't have any trouble transfering the concepts to Balls.
