Check out this Knob!

TonyT89 Apr 22, 2011 07:11 PM

Well, received a real nice trio of knobs from my friend Tad but just wanted to show you guys the male which is the star of the group. Very excited about this acquisition. He has a very high band count and is from Jonel Lopez's megaband line.

That's a very nice knob!
I have heard that Nevada recently made pyromelana a protected species; consequently folks like Tad in Nevada can no longer keep them.

Yea, imagine that....L.p.knoblochi range is not even close to NV. That sucks for Tad working with a species for a long time and all of a sudden have to give it up in a blink of an eye...Damn Government!!!

If it is like any other stupid state law then they probably outlawed Lampropeltis pyromelana........without stating the subspecies that is in Nevada........
I agree...Damn State Government!!!!

Couldn't agree with you anymore than I already do...they need to get the facts straight with the species.

See...all they specify is the species level and not the subspecific level.......Other states do this as well......Stupid law makers.......

At least Texas has L. g. splendida and holbrooki on their white list and not just L. getula......

Bob you are absolutely right. I spoke to Tad on the phone. It is very disheartening as he has worked hard for over a decade...20 years I think to acquire the knob collection he has always wanted, and because they (Nevada) consider them L.p pyromelana which is ridiculous, it is very sad for breeders such as for Tad. If I am not mistaken, I believe knobs are his favorite kings as well. =(. Thanks Bob and I will make sure he will never escape from me!

Thanks Doug! To be honest with you, he sort of reminds me of a type II knob male that Steve Osborne had back then with the side pattern. I couldn't have asked for a cooler looking knob!

I got some free moss that came with an exo-terra hide from the store. I would love to use the moss for my knobs, but I don't know why the moss gets all moldy or has cotton white growth coming out of it within 3 days.

Do I need to change it out everyday? I put the moss in a container with water inside. Could the reason be that I am not supposed to drown the moss with water or is it not the right type of moss? The box does not say what type of moss it is. If the type of moss is the reason, what type of moss should I use for the knobs? I should also add that I put the moss container on the heated side of the tank. Would love to know what the problem is so my knobs can be happy! =)

KcTrader Apr 23, 2011 08:10 AM

Tony, The problem maybe because of the amount of moisture you have in the container....I usually soak the moss and then squeeze out excess water, I have noticed that if it is sheet moss(usually Green) if there isn't decent are flow it will die and mold over. I use to use the sheet moss and have to spray it every to every other day just to keep it damp....I now use only sphagnum moss, and I have mixed it with coconut coir or peat and seems to work good for moist hides and lay boxes....Just my experiences..

Hehe. Here's a female that I held back that is a sibling to your male. She was the one with the most banding from 2010 and is a pig as well.

So sad that Tad had to give up all his knoblochi but I'm glad you got some nice ones when he sold them as well.

That snake has 90 bands to vent?! That is really nice Jonel! Congrats!
-----

JonelLopez Apr 26, 2011 12:58 AM

Thanks Jimmy. I think it's more like 83 bands from neck to vent. I had another female in '09 who had 88 bands neck to vent and 108 to the end of the tail. Here's pic of him.

Going back to Tony's post. He got pretty much the first choice animals that Tad picked out from '10 which were the top 2 males. Tad was supposed to breed these to his knoblochi as well as some nice females that he's been raising. I really feel sorry for Tad that he had to let the project go. He really likes knobs as much as I do. I hope his other projects makes up for the loss.
