GREENWOOD, Mo. -- A metro animal shelter got some new residents on Friday that ended up there as part of a police investigation.
Some of the new reptiles that have taken up residence at Monkey Island in Easter Jackson County are three American Alligators and an 8-foot python.
The staff said the alligators are in pretty shape after being pulled out of a home by Kansas City police earlier this week. The trio are believed to be about 1 year old.
The animal sanctuary also received the python, whose tail has bite marks that are believed to be from rats dropped in its cage.
"The rats will get pretty nervous and bit the snake," said animal expert Dana Savorelli. "Could be instinct knowing it's a predator. Who knows for sure? The snake has had this going on for quite some time. Layers and layers of healing."
The animals came from a bust on Kansas City's East Side.
