"Python Hunters" returns, new episodes

jaykis Apr 23, 2011 02:41 PM

Next Friday the 29th on the NatGeoWild channel. These guys were the only credible voices/show out there, so it should be a good show. Not sure how many are in the can, though. Unfortunately there's a show on right after called "Snake Underground" which is supposed to be about the fascination we have with keeping snakes.

Expect a hack job.

I enjoyed Python Hunters more or less, even though there seemed to be some poor representation on some of the facts (like morphs snakes being "cross bred" and such) but the other program, "Snake Underworld" was pretty poorly done, and was very much along the lines of the typical fear mongering junk animal planet pumps out.

In one part he (Henry Rollins) speaks about dispelling myths and so on, but with the next breath it was back to making sure to fear that YOUR neighbor might have deadly snakes - ooga-booga-BOO!

Sure, it could have been worse, but with it being on Nat geo, and behind python hunters, I guess I was just hoping for more facts and information and less *they are out there waiting to kill you*

Why is this program even called "Snake Underworld" if it supposedly highlights legal aspects of our trade? That poorly chosen title alone implies that we herpers must be a new class of criminal in today's society. Who knew?

"ROLLINS: It looks at the keeper as much as the kept. We hang out with people who are professionals who have huge enclosures, acres and acres, where they’re breeding animals outside, like iguanas and crocodilians. Then we meet the guy who’s buying a rattlesnake with money. He’s paying cash for the most toxic rattlesnake in America, the Mojave. So we’re basically getting into the keepers who are keeping rattlesnakes in their homes in a residential neighborhood, and they haven’t told the neighbors, who will find out [when they see this program]."

Along with "AX: At what point and why did you decide to stop keeping snakes yourself?"

"ROLLINS: They are high-maintenance, if you want to be a good keeper, and so it was a combination of traveling more and more and more and more, getting more busy."

He'd better never get, oh, I don't know, a dog? a cat? Good lord, I could lend him a parrot or a horse...then he'd think himself a punished slave is snakes are high-maintenance!

Wow, along with some of the other stuff he is saying, I have now lost all my respect for him. I know what he says about feeling OK with snake keeping, but hes sure going to help nail us to the wall in the eyes of the "average Joe".

" I have now lost all my respect for him" As a real musician who takes his craft very seriously I have never had any respect for Henry Rollins. He's a joke just like his old band black flag was.
I kind of chuckled when I saw this thread. I thought to myself, "this is the guy who had that video where he was covered in oil and kept screaming, 'cause I'm a liar,;liar liar". The members of the band I was in when that video came out used to joke about it all the time.
I have a hard time taking any of the documentaries they come out with these days seriously so now they have one hosted by henry rollins.
Maybe we can get one hosted by Brett Michaels next.

I've had the opportunity to meet Henry, he's a really great guy. He cares a great deal about reptiles. Go back to your Michael Buble crooner Sailor Moon bubblegum Backstreet Boys stuff, because if you think Henry hasn't contributed to the music world, the reptile world, or just the world in general, you're sadly mistaken. He runs a radio show out of Santa Monica college in Los Angeles and i've heard more variety on his show than any corporate whoredom radio station. Henry is real. Bieber is not. He's been on several National Geographic shows about reptiles, and in some ways, picks up where Steve Irwin left off. Ok, so perhaps Henry's a little rougher around the edges, but I can assure you, he loves Herps. He always has, and shares that passion with all of us on these boards. Maybe if you look beyond the literal translation of Liar, and peer deeper into the possiblities of what the song means in your perspective, outside the literal, it could shed more light. He's got waaay better songs than Liar too I might ad. Anyhow, I think he's great and i've had the opportunity to meet him face to face.

Wow, are you ever judgemental!
Saying "He'd better never get, oh, I don't know, a dog? a cat? Good lord, I could lend him a parrot or a horse...then he'd think himself a punished slave is snakes are high-maintenance!"

I'd like to see you do half his tour schedule and tell me taking care of yourself isn't high maintenance afterwards. He's on the road more than you or I are at home, so taking care of anything, would be difficult and high maintenance. And I for one think he's right, reptiles are high maintenance, you essentially have to create a small ecosystem for each species you have. All herps have specific requirements. For someone who's not home frequently, this poses a problem.

And then YOU continue by saying "Wow, along with some of the other stuff he is saying, I have now lost all my respect for him. I know what he says about feeling OK with snake keeping, but hes sure going to help nail us to the wall in the eyes of the "average Joe"."

Have you even read what you just wrote? You judged an entire human being on 3 seconds of a TV interview that YOU very obviously misunderstood the point. Saying you've lost all respect for him, pffft, you're likely jealous. Jealous he's had the opportunity to Carpe Diem, and see parts of the world you'll never see. That man has drinken cow urine in India! Eaten rat roasted over an open fire. Don't even pretend to come in here talking like you know a damn thing about Henry Rollins. I've got more respect for him than 1000 of you. He's done lots for the herp community, what have you done? He's done tonnes for the music community, what have you done? Hell, he's contributed to the world as a whole simply by photographing it in his book Occupants, what have you done? Lost all respect for him? Pffft, you don't know a damn thing about respect.
