mblons Apr 24, 2011 03:51 PM

I have heard yes it's ok and no it could damage the eggs. Is there a majority opinion? -

I feed meals that progressively get smaller, up to their pre-egg lay shed.

I feed my gravid females who are about to lay until they refuse food... Most of my females will eat up until the day they lay... This is the case for just about every egg laying colubrid species I have bred, not just hognose snakes...

It is actually beneficial to feed them for a few reasons...

1- It will help them keep good weight on and they will recover faster after laying...

2- Feeding can actually help them lay without becoming egg bound... This is not a proven fact but I have had females that have had a stuck egg or 2 and a feeding has helped push the eggs out...

3- Some females will eat their eggs... I have had female snakes that I have actually had to feed during their egg laying in order to keep them from eating their eggs...
