Aquarium light as supplemental light

safo Sep 29, 2003 01:54 AM

Ok b4 you wonder, i have an 5.0 uvb flourescent light and a 100 wat basking lamp on top of the cage. The cage is next to a fish tank. The fish have passed, and i have turned the light to aim the the cham cage. It is about 6 inches from the side of the cage and horizontally. The bulb is a 15 watt "power-glo" , o have noticed my cham seems mor eactive since i've been using this light. Can i use it as a night light? or should i turn it off with the other lights? i am going to look up the uv rating on the bulb to se if im wasting my time. anyone heard of this?

I'm assuming this is a white light, in that case it is not a good idea to leave it on at night. Chameleons (and any other animal, for that matter) need a night cycle without any type of lighting. Even the so-called red night lights seems to disrupt them.

Hope this helps!

He may be more active just because there is more light in his cage, not necessarily uv. I wouldn't leave the light on at night though, chams need complete darkness to sleep from it. He'll just find a way to hide from it.
I use a plain florescent bulb (with my MV and basking spotlight) to add extra light to my panthers cage, b/c it's pretty big. She seems to eat more and wander more when it's not dull or dark in there.

I am no expert, but from what I have read/heard more is not necessarily better. Here is a site on Anoles (which have the same basic lighting/d3 needs as cham's) with detail about choice of light, more isn't better, etc. Hope this is helpful!
