Hide box too small or what?!

rdm01 Apr 25, 2011 03:10 PM

hi gang!

I have a hide box on the warm end over the heat pad for my adult bp ( sex unknown and dont care either). The snake is about 4 ft at 1630 grams. Its in a 41 qt stand alone tub. No rack as i only have one snake and have no desire for more. The hide is big enough for the snake to fit into compleyely with a little room to spare... But not a lot. Basically it barely fits at all when fed.

The snake coils up inside and will eventually lift the hide so that it rests on top of the snakes body while it is coiled underneith. I have seen countless photos online of this so i know its normal for that to happen with light weight plastic hide boxes.

Does that mean i need a larger hide? Or maybe a heavier one?
I see some keepers use very large hides ( cat litter pan) while others use extremely tight fitting ones and some dont use any. . I stay away from terra cotta as the urates and feces smell seeps into the clay and is almost impossible to get rid of unless bleached

Whats your take?

Almost all snakes prefer a fairly tight hide box. It gives them a sense of security. It sounds like you might want to move up just a little bit if it's sitting on top of the snake though.

you are fine....sounds good to me...balls like exactly what you have...tight....and as you said...it lifts as needed....I am amazed at the small space they fit into....
