Ovulation?

Bolitochrome Apr 26, 2011 09:13 PM

I am more experienced with Nebraska's native, viviparous snakes. So an intense ovulation such as this is new to me. She is a "Grayeye" from Jim Stelpflug bred to an L. m. thayeri. Eggs are just for us.

An interesting crease developed along her belly today when she really puffed up.

Boy she is ready to go. Has she been with a male yet?

BTW that is "greeri" not grayeye!

Very nice looking snake!

And she IS certainly ovulating......What was she bred to?
She is not a pure Greeri nor Thayeri herself.....Looks almost Alterna to me.....but A Greeri X Thayeri would certainly produce that look as well......Glad you two are keeping the offspring......

Poor planning and procrastination on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part...

Sorry, I should have been clearer. The female is a hybrid between L. m. thayeri and L. alternus. Grayband X Thayeri = Grayeye. The term was coined by Jim Stelpflug, I was told.

The more research I do the more I am aware there is controversy around breeding such hybrids because people may try to pawn the babies off as a pure "this or that". We've just fallen in love with her and the male, a very bright orange L. m. thayeri, and wanted the babies for ourselves. They are beautiful and well tempered which also makes them excellent for presentations and school visits. The prettier the snake the easier it is to convince people to give it a chance and learn...

The male we bred her to is (what we were told is) an L. m. thayeri named Scorch:

She looks well along in her pregnancy, or gravid state. Has she gone blue yet for her pre-lay shed? My pyro female got very swollen during the latter part of her gravidity (is this a word? LOL!)

Whatever, your snakes are awesome, and I wish you the best with the reproduction.

Thank you very much! She hasn't grayed out for shed yet. But she is certainly crabby, lol. I have an egg box with vermiculite ready in an incubator we converted from a wine fridge. Any day she lays those eggs we'll be ready!

I am really looking forward to seeing the variability in the babies. I use these snakes as teaching tools for everyone from children to the elderly, so the prettier the better.

I am taking lots of pictures to document the process and plan on making a collage/timeline of the images as a poster for my presentations. Inevitably the usual questions include sex, breeding status, age, how many eggs they lay, etc. I have a whole batch of friends, snake lovers and non-lovers, who are excited about the clutch.

You probably already know this, but be sure to give her a lay box nest of moist sphagnum moss to lay her eggs in.

My pyro Dotz the other day in her nest, a Glad container with a hole in the lid. If they don't have a nest they get distressed and may lay the eggs in the water bowl, or have trouble laying them.

Yep, got that much ready She has her usual hide which has very finely shredded cypress mulch in it, another hide with vermiculite in the bottom of it, and another with some moss. She seems to like the vermiculite one the most. I have been giving her plenty of time to check things out and decide where to lay. Thank you for the help!
