air conditioner in the snake room?

mikefedzen Apr 26, 2011 10:41 PM

Just wondering how many of you have a air conditioner in your snake room, mine is kind of small and a little cluttered so it tends to get kind of hot... And it's not even really too warm outside yet. So much so that with windows open and 2 fans on it's still extremely stuffy. Anybody with a decent number of snakes knows maintenance/feeding time in a hot snake room is never too enjoyable, lol.

The thermostat for the racks is set to kick on if it drops below 81 degrees... And the heat hasn't kicked on on that bad boy for about a week now.

But I'm wondering more if the noise the a/c makes would disturb the snakes in any way?

I have an a/c in the snake room. It is actually on 24/7 all year. well, almost, except during the winter when nighttime temps drop to 50 or below and in the spring when I am warming everything up I may keep it off and open some windows.

I keep my snake room at 70-74 and have back heat for all my racks...The snakes don't seem to mind at all, I don't see any different behavior....They might be used to it as it is on 24/7 but it gets pretty loud sometimes when it kicks on.

I live in South Texas and have one running year round....I have central air as a backup in case the window unit goes out.....

I use it to brumate my snakes too.......With a few minor adjustments I can get it to hold half of my snake room down into the low 40s.......

I keep my snake room around 72 and provide a hot spot of 90......

BTW...the electric bills are rather high....LOL

Since snakes have no ears and so are deaf, the noise should not bother them. If the air conditioner vibrates while running that could possibly come to their attention. Enjoying cool temps would offset any minor discomfort from the fans in the air conditioner vibrating, though.

You lucky guys, having air conditioners! During short summer heat waves I give my snakes those little gel packs frozen wrapped in a towel. Fortunately most of the year my location at 3200 feet elevation west slope Sierras does not require air conditioning. For prolonged hot spells I put my snakes out in the shade in a screen tent, as I do with my mice all summer, (in their cages, of course). Mice really do not tolerate high temperatures but mine thrive and breed all summer sitting on the ground on a tarp with the deep shade and air flow. I have another tent set up for the snakes. I only keep temperate zone snakes and lizards.

The screen tent for the mice.

I live in an area that has huge temp fluctuations, so I do have both heat and a/c in my room; lows of 0, highs (ambient temp) of 105 over the course of the year...gotta do both. And ambient temps without cooling in that room get much higher, since it's stagnant, and gets the rising sun...the a/c doesnt bother my snakes that I can tell.

Mike, I have a portable AC unit on wheels, the type sold at many DIY stores. You put the exhaust hose out a window or vent. Very quiet and very capable. It can take a 10ft x 10ft shed from 85 deg down to 75 deg in a couple of minutes.

I too use a portable 12,000 BTU unit. It drops the temps in my building just a few minutes.

How much is that portable unit?, and where can you get one(or similar one) like it?.

Does it produce any heat like an in-wall unit does out the back when set on "cool" as a normal unit does, or does it seem to make minimal(or no heat)??.

Thanks man, I would like to know anything more you could tell me about that handy-looking unit.....thanks!

The ones I've seen have a flexible vent tube and an adapter to fit a window, so the hot air blows out the window. There may be other designs, but I think all A/C units generate heat also. Some one correct me if I'm wrong?

Thanks, that makes good sense that it would have a flexible exhaust to go out of the building. I appreciate the input Jorge.

Hi Doug. It does throw out a little bit of heat out the back, through the flex pipe ran up to the window. I really enjoy it. Normally the 12000 BTU is 399.00, and the 10000 BTU was closer to 299.00. I am pretty sure I got it at Home Depot. I went to Lowes first, and they told me it was seasonal, and not out on the shelf yet. I went to HD then, and they were not sure. I walked around the store and found them in with the lawn mowers. A few days later, I was at Lowes, and went to the lawn mower section, instead of the appliance section, and there they were.

Ahh, okay!....thanks a bunch for the info there Shane. Yeah, the "lawnmower section" wouldn't be the first place a guy would look for an air conditioner..LOL!

cheers!, ~Doug

My room has central heat and air. During the summer months the air allows me to provide a wider thermal gradient which I've come to appreciate as beneficial. The only drawback it that it also decreases humidity so you need to be more cognizant of this requirement.
