When can I candle?

Rob Lewis Apr 27, 2011 08:37 PM

So, at the encouragement of my seven year old son, I paired up some corns this year for the first time in almost 15 years. Last night she dropped 20 eggs that all looked and felt good (at least as I remember) but when I candled them this evening most of them looked pretty yellow with no visible veins. Am I remembering right that good eggs candle good right away? Is it likely that the eggs candling infertile now are, in fact, infertile or do the veins develop after a couple of days? As I said, it has been a long time since I bred corns (or any egg layers for that matter) and I am amazed at how much of it seems brand new! Thanks for the help.

I normally wait 2 to 3 weeks before I candle mine! Before that it's kinda' iffy!If they appear bright white from the start they are probably O.K.! Good luck! Jeff

Thanks Jeff and Jorge,

I don't know where I got the idea that you could see veins right away. As I said, it has been a long time since breeding egg layers. My plan is to keep em cooking until they either hatch or go bad. Here is a picture taken this morning. To me they look good but time will tell. Thanks again to both for your help.

I agree with Jeff, it takes a few days at least, probably more like a week before the veins start to show. I found that good eggs will have an pinkish amber color even before the veins show. If the egg lights up like a light bulb and has a white or yellow glow it's probably bad. I use a pen light and just place it against the egg one by one. Do this in a dark room and you should be able to see any viens after a week or two.
