Alterna Eggs!

mrkent Apr 27, 2011 09:37 PM

These are my first kingsnake eggs. The corns I have bred the last few years have been good practice.

The female is a generic '08, and the male is a Hwy 349 (Robert Palaez stock) '08.

First the pair.

Then the female before laying. This was the day of her pre-lay shed.

Here are the eggs.

And the female after laying. She was hungry this morning!

I bought a hovabator, which will be a great improvement over my homemade setup I have used for my cornsnakes.

This is also my first time to use vermiculite instead of moss. I mixed it 50/50 by weight with water, and it seems about right.

Since it is early in the year, is it likely she would lay again if I put the male back with her after a few meals?

Thanks for looking! Now the wait!

Congrats!! Big clutch and the female looks great after laying. You must be keeping her well fed!!

Thanks Joe. She ate several meals after coming out of brumation in February. She was already at a good weight after brumation, so the meals got her good and ready for egg production.

Alright Kent! Those look great, good luck with them. How big is your female?

Jorge, I haven't measured her since last May when she was 34 inches. I would guess at least 3 1/2 feet.

My female is right at 3 feet to the tip of the tail.

14 eggs seems an incredible amount for an alterna (am assuming they are like pyros in clutch size...)

What ever, I hope they all hatch! Your alterna are exactly my ideal alterna, with lots of orange.

I have a Hovabator which I bought in 2008 to hatch lizard eggs but had a lot of trouble keeping temps down during the summer heat waves, ergo my old fish shipping box for hatching reptile eggs instead. It is easy to pop a frozen gel pack into the fish box. There is no room in the Hovabator for that. There is an incubator (Exo Terra ® Reptile Incubator ) which both heats and cools, but is sort of expensive. I like the cooling feature a lot.

Ahh, I read some reviews on the Exo-Terra and think I will stay with my reliable old fish shipping box! LOL! Gotta babysit it during heat waves, but at the rate this year is going maybe we will have a cool summer. I just need for May, June, and part of July to not go over 82 F, or its the old gel pacs to the rescue.

This is the first year that I have had a snake room, and it might get too warm in there. If so, I can always move the Hovabator to another part of the house. Anyway, these eggs should be hatching before we have the hottest weather here in the NW.

I agree with you that the alternas with lots of orange are the best. But...some of the altera phase are pretty cool looking too.
