NC Foothills Locality Corns Update

westernNC Apr 28, 2011 02:04 PM

Introduced this pair today and witnessed copulation. Went back and checked the distance on my odometer while road cruising Sunday night and they were found exactly 2 miles apart along the same road. I love the silver and orange...a pretty unique look.

Is there anyone else working with NC foothills locality corns?

Thanks,
Michael

I just told my wife that these photos represent my biggest herping accomplishment. I started working on this in 2003...researching the locality, making trips back and forth to find the right habitat, taking trips down east to learn more about how to find corns there, talking with locals, talking with biologists and fellow herpers...last spring I collected the male under tin and the female was found just two weeks ago.

Really excited about this. Still a long way to go before producing young, but when I do, there are a long list of people I will want to thank and a lot of them frequent this forum...

Thank you for looking.

Awesome Michael!! Quite an accomplishment I must say. I'm just glad I was with you when we found that female a couple weeks ago. What a blast. Looking forward to a nice big clutch and baby NC foothills corns!!

Thanks Dave!

Very cool! I've lived in the NC Piedmont for 11 years and haven't seen the first corn snake. I've understand that they're missing from this part of the state. It's nice to see some NC locality corns in the hobby. Good luck! I think they're neat looking.

That Citrus Co, FL locale corn is sweet!!! You are right on about the corns being absent from the majority of the Piedmont of NC. I grew up in Guilford and Rockingham Counties and never found one in either of those counties. I have found quite a few in the eastern part of the state, but their number drop off significantly once you get out of the coastal plain/sandhills.
