Post pics of locality Corns!

a153fish Apr 29, 2011 02:11 PM

After seeing the post below of the NC foothills Corns, and the ctrus County Florida Corn, I thought there maybe more cool locality corns out there. If anyone has any, I'd love to see them. We don't see many in the corn snake hobby, with the exception of Miami, and Okeetees. I'll try to get some fresh pics of some of my Polk County Florida Corns up later.

yearling I collected last spring...I have a pair of these found within 20 yards of each other. I need to take some current pics. They are nice orange/burgundy/gray snakes...

westernNC Apr 29, 2011 05:26 PM

The corns from Scotland County, the border between the sandhills and coastal plain, are pretty variable. Some have the "okeetee" look, while others are really dark and plain brown. This is the darkest one I have seen. I was herping with Peter Jolles and our sons in late 2009 when we found this guy.

westernNC Apr 29, 2011 05:33 PM

Corns from the coast of NC are usually bright orange and red, especially from the southern coast. I managed to find these two just a few miles from the ocean while working "down east" a couple years back...

I know you guys have seen these pics before, but I couldn't pass up on the invitation to post some new pics.. I feel that wild type corns are the most spectacular of all North Carolina snakes in terms of variability.

Thanks for looking.

Wow! So cool to see that there are still people that appreciate the locals!! I have some pics of my own I'll dig up and post!!Excellent thread! Jeff

Unfortunately, many corns called Okeetees are beautiful corns that have been given that name, because many think that corns that would come from the Okeetee area would look like as such, and use the term " Okeetee " as a color phase. In reality though, true Okeetees are just that, true locality Okeetee corns.

I was fortunate to get this locality Okeetee corn last year from John Meltzer. He has been so much fun to own and to watch grow. One of my absolute favorite snakes in my entire collection.

Yeah Billy,MI agree! The same goes with the Miami Corns too. But many Okeetee thought they have been selectively bred still are of pure bloodline. The same for Miami corns too. That is a real beauty by the way, Billy.

Nice snakes! Thanks for sharing! I wonder if that dark wash is a locality trait or just unique to that individual in that population. I have found a random dark one from a few different locales that produce typically brighter snakes across NC. The first dor that I found in the foothills that led me to the location that produced the pair of foothills corns was so dark that I drove past it without stopping the first time because I thought it was a black rat snake.

Thanks Billy! I piared those two together and the female looks gravid for sure. The ones below them with pics of them in the trees are very red, and the camera never seems to do them justice. They were paired up, and the female looks gravid also. Each year these get better and better. the Orange WC Lake Wales male is also a stunner. I forgot to mention all this are from Polk County Corns, just different cities.

and you have something even more special. I am going to hold back every Foothills corn I produce the first year to see how the colors develop and line breed the nicest ones.

I saw a guy do this with NC locality eastern kings and end up with wide banded easterns from a locality that usually produces thin banded snakes. He just selectively bred for the widest bands each generation. By F3, he had wide banded beauties!

Love what you're doing with that locality.

Michael

DISCERN May 01, 2011 09:29 PM

I could not agree more Michael!!

I love locality, absolutely love it. Even though I don't take it to the extreme and say anything that is NOT locality is not special, as I have plenty of non-locality snakes as well, something about locality snakes just makes it all more special for me and many others.

Even though not a corn, here is a locality northern pine I have, from Ocean co. lines, to share for fun:

Nice Pine Billy. I did breed Northen Pines a while back, and I had a locally caught Florida Pine for a few years. I wish I had more room to get some more.

Yup, that's what I did! I kept every one I produced untill I could determine which ones were the best. I'm glad I did. I wish I could do that with all my corn snakes since they change so much in their first 2 years, but that is becomeing harder to do as my collection is swelling already, lol.

Shoot me an email. Those Alabama corns look a lot like the ones I am finding in the NC foothills. I am wondering if the habitat is similar out there to where I'm finding them here. I would like to discuss how you find them and compare ideas with you, but not on a forum. My email is coone.michael@yahoo.com

Drop me a line sometime.

Thanks,
Michael

and I agree with what someone else said; it's great to see the interest in the different localities :*)

My grandsons caught this female five years ago in the Daisy Community in northeast Horry County. Good to see the corns from the sandhills of North Carolina. I hale from Richmond Co.

westernNC May 01, 2011 06:14 PM

Stunning animal. I have tried so many times to find one from New Hanover County NC, just across the state line, but just haven't been in the right place at the right time. That snake is exactly what I pictured them looking like. I have a female from about two hours up the coast that laid 13 eggs today.

Will snap some more pics of the sandhills corns in the next week or so (both are opaque) and share on here.

Thanks,
Michael

It came from the Cattail Creek Road area of Pensacola.

Unfortunately it was a road kill, but I also found an over 48" eastern milk female from that same area. That was a huge disappointment to find her dead.

If you want, we can plan a couple trips up there together this spring to line up a male... Just let me know. I live about an hour and a half from there.

Any pics of the triangulum from that locale?

Thanks
Michael

camby May 11, 2011 09:30 PM

I haven't been able to find the pics, but I will try again over the weekend.

I will contact you next time I am up that way. Typically I only make it up once or twice a year when we come up to go camping in th Black Mnts. at Winter Star.

BTW, Clay Davenport of Appalachain Reptile Breeders lives up that way and I don't think you can find a more nice or knowledgeable person in this hobby. Of course you may already know Clay, but just thought I would mention it to you in case you didn't. It is nice to have people with similar interst close to you especially when they are as nice as him.
