An Alabama Park Walk_Off topic

RG Apr 30, 2011 10:51 PM

I flew into Alabama for business earlier this week.

I was very fortunate that I got out of northern Alabama just an hour or so before the sheet hit the fan!

However, the day before the bad weather hit, I was able to spend a few hours at a great park walking around... I found a few amazing things!

Many Northern Slimy Salamanders (Can you say super glue!!! I don't recommend picking these guys up!!!)

and a baby

Then I found this amazing Speckled King (female):

She was out looking for other herps as well!

Just when I thought my day was over, I flipped a 20ft board and found 3 of these jewels,NORTHERN RED SALAMANDERS!!!!

How can you not want one of these...they are so freakin cute!

Every one of these guys were a first for me...I was so glad I took the time to search!

All these pics were taken with my phone, but they turned out ok.

It was very difficult to catch something so beautiful and then release her. But, if I really want one in the future, there are many available in the pet trade, so I couldn't justify removing such a good looking specimen.

Nice post Rusty, I also love the getula, but I've always been envious of all the Salamanders you all have in the East, nice variety of finds too.

I've never seen any Salamanders here in Florida...but according to this website...we have many!

Florida Salamanders

DMong May 02, 2011 02:16 PM

Yeah, of all the decades I have lived in south Florida growing up, I don't recall EVER seeing a single salamander either. Maybe most of them are further north, but then again, one would have to be in the right suitable habitat at the right time of the year I guess too...(shrug).

I would have never guessed there were that many different kinds in Florida alone!
