Redbelly snakes

Nicodemus Sep 29, 2003 08:53 AM

Ok, I've been looking for northern redbellies ever since mid spring and I haven't found a single one (lots of garters this year however)...one of my students has found one (he let it go) however so I know they are in the area.

So my question is where do I find them? As a kid I had several large pieces of plywood I used to leave in a field and check every day. I used to find em by the handful...I'd keep em until it got dark and let em go.
So tried leaving boards and such in the habitats I understand they would/should be found in, but no luck at all. Any thoughts?

My friends and I find a lot of storeria after a rain on the roads outside of the city. Another good method is, as you said, to flip trash. Go around looking for old boards, couches, ect. and flip them. More often than not you should find some. Andy

Funny actually....its raining right now...however its later in the evening.
How late would they stay out? Also, how populated is the area you find them? I'm in a smallish town...a decent amount of people, but a decent amount of grassy and wooded areas too...would they be found here? My workplace is much more rural so I can check there too....

I found a redbelly in the GW Natl Forest in the Blue Ridge of VA. This was back in the spring. I found him on a wooded hill side.
