HELP ! with giant boa

river9000 May 02, 2011 05:14 PM

I will make it short. I bought a huge (11 -12' ) (115 pound) female BCC on kingsnake from an animal resuce. some guy was going to jail and turned all his pets in. I sent a car to Michigan to pick it up as FEDEX wanted a fortune.

Snake arrives, a very beautiful and calm female. Very, very fat.
I have bred many pythons but never boas. This animal seems very gravid to me as the 'fat sack' is between the six and nine foot marks ( head to tail). There is an extra roll of fat/flab/skin evenly disbursed on both sides (laterally) that resembles love handles on a fat human.

The resuue center asked the former snake owner it history and was told that this snake has not been near a male in a year.

Can this animal be gravid?
If so, when do boas ovulate or birth? ( as with pythons is always mostly June/July).

She just lays there in the hottest area of the enclosure, way over 90 degrees. She is also sort of red on her bottom scales as if she paid in urine but she hasn't.

any advice would be great. I hate to come home to a bunch of squished babies that would be viable otherwise.

Thanks- and she is the largest boa my eyes have ever seen in forty years of looking.

I am not a breeding expert, but sperm retention is possible... she could just be an overweight boa too, meaning fed and not out enough to exercise. as far as birthing, it would all depend on when she was bred, or ovulated if sperm retention is the case. breeders have litters already, some in february all through june and to july. they deliver typically 105 days after ovulation shed. I haven't seen a mother squish the babies, but one that size definately could!
ps lets see that hog!

Sounds like she's probably over weight for sure.

It's hard to know if she is gravid, pictures could be helpful but really still would be guessing.

At least pictures would give people a perspective of what they are looking at.

Pictures would help.... but I can say this.... BCC.. if it is def a BCC, are pretty hard to get them to become gravid without some consistent work... and being that it is obiese I would lean toward "NO" but get us some pics.. CHEERS

Has she eaten since you have had her? Some of my boas will eat early on in the pregnancy, but the farther along they get the less the even act like they are hungry.
