3 week old RTB feeding????

Trinkets May 03, 2011 04:44 PM

OK i am new to having babies. a quick history. 2 mos ago i adopted a 7 1/2 ft female CRTB that i was told was well fed. she was 42 lbs. 3 weeks ago she surprised the hell out of me when she began delivering babies, 28 live, 1 still born and 7 slugs.i was told she was kept alone...?? i threw together a rack system real quick and put them in tubs lined with paper towels and small water dishes.but anyways Ive been trying to feed the babies as they shed, first i tried f/t hoppers(that's all the pet store had available)and didn't have any takers. i found a local mouse breeder and picked up a few live pinkies and no one has eaten. both times Ive left the mice in the tub over night and no one will eat. i am a little concerned as most of the babies dropped their yolk within 48 hours. what else can i try to get these babies to accept their first meal. any help would be greatly appreciated.

First, check your baby rack temps - should be around 85 degrees.

Second, pinky mice are way too small for a newborn BCI. Mine are typically born at give or take 60 grams. Easily take down a mouse hopper. Babies prefer live to start with and can usually be switched over to F/T but not from the start. need to learn to eat first, then sub in warmed up F/T.

Don't worry they will eat eventually. Live mice pinkies in my opinion are too small, I would try to get crawlers or hoppers to feed them and try later on in the evening. I had babies I offered meals for a whole month and they didn't eat but there bellies when born where a little bigger than the rest of there litter mates. Neonates like to see movement so bigger prey would be better because mice pinkies don't move around too much. Like I said crawler or hopper mice in my opinion would be better to use. I hope everything works out for you and congratulation on that unknowingly litter. Good luck. My picky eaters didn't eat until about 2 months after birth, so they'll come around keep trying. Give fresh water everyday and everything should work out.
