Hogs and Eggbinding

eksnek May 04, 2011 02:53 PM

Greetings,

I am starting this thread for 2 reasons. First, i have been hearing about the frequency of female hogs becoming eggbound from a few breeders. I have heard causes can be diet, lack of room in laybox, or size (animal being too obese). Any info regarding this subject matter is appreciated.

Secondly, i have a pos. het pink pastel female (about 270-280 grams) that layed 2 duds last night. This morning, i found 2 more. Should i be concerned ? and what is a good way to tell if there are any eggs retained?

Regards,
Kenny

Hey Kenny,
In my experience from breeding various egg laying reptiles, egg binding has little to do with diet or the actual size of the snake...

Obese females will more than likely not even ovulate and females under the suggested breeding weight will normally do just fine when it comes to laying eggs... Smaller females will lay smaller eggs and smaller clutches...

3 major causes of egg binding are Improper nest areas, dehydration and the female being week or unfit for breeding...

The size of the nest box is not as important as the conditions in the nest box... A nest box can be on the small side... What matters is the heat gradient and humidity level... If the temps and humidity are not correct, the female may either retain the eggs and become egg bound or drop them in a water dish...

Some breeders tend to remove the water dishes when a female is about to lay eggs so there is no chance of the female dropping the clutch in the dish.. Personally, I feel this is a very bad idea because it can cause dehydration especially in gravid females... If your nest area is prime, the female will not resort to laying in a water dish...

A female can be unfit for breeding for many reasons... They can be week from being spotty feeders or from lack of movement... In both cases both of these reasons can be traced to poor husbandry... Improper temps and cage size can cause an animal to not feed properly and can cause them to be less active...

A female can be 300 grams and still be in very poor breeding condition...

When snakes become egg bound, it is almost always the fault of the keeper and it is not something that "just happens sometimes"... It is avoidable in most cases...

Make sure the temps are proper in the cage/bin...

Be sure you place your nest box in a part of the cage that maintains the proper nesting temps and be sure to set up your box so it retains the proper humidity level...

Be certain than you keep you gravid females well hydrated...

If everything is in order, the chances of a female becoming egg bound are very slim...

Gregg,

I really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience and advice.

After reading your reply: i checked the nest box and it is definitely too dry. Then I realized the hot side of the 28qt tub is only 84f. I normally have it at 94f.

I re-secured the temp probe... this should correct the temp problem. The nest box is rectangular with one end placed on the warm side of the tub. I have also re-hydrated the substrate in the nest box. Hopefully this is not too late.

I really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience and advice.

Regards,
Kenny
