I'm sure the decrepency is that the people your talking too are talking about columbian B&Ws. The word is that they're harder to tame down though I don't know if that's really true. The Argentine B&Ws like the reds are said to be nice. I sure think that's true because both of mine are absolute angels! Here's a pic of my male Argentine B&W.

my red acts alot like a berdie with a bigger appatite he walks around all over the place with me, and his favorite show to watch is family guy. he never misses it. now my Arg B&W is a lil selfish git. all she wants is to hiss and show off her teeth. but when she sees the syringe i use to give her gatorade. she runs out and bes all nice. ( shes a suck up basically). same thing when she heres the bath tub running. shes never bitten me before but i do no she wants to.but my paraguay red tegu is the sweetest most tv loving lizard ever. =) hope this helps
I have heard all kinds of people say that Columbian B&W's are more aggressive or that they are mean. I have to say that this may be true for the species in general, but my B&W is a very loving friendly little guy. We have had him for three months and he has never whipped or tried to bite he only huffs at me when I am taking him out of the bath tub or trying to put him back in his cage. He sleeps on my sons stomach and just loves to chase our two little dogs around the house(just wanting to play) I guess I am just wanting to let you know there are good and bad in every species and you will never know what you are getting just try it and take the best care of it you can. I recommend getting one from a very reputable source or if there is a pet store where the people are knowledgable then you can interact with the animal before taking it into your home. Good luck
