New to snakes...

chimbakka Sep 29, 2003 10:57 AM

I am getting a snake (possibly) in the next few months. Right now I'm interested in either a ball python, a milksnake, or a black and white kingsnake.
I am doing some of my own research, but I was wondering if anyone here could lead me to some good beginner articles/links, or if there are any caresheets that are preffered that I could read.
Thankyou!

of the three I would go for the Kingsnake... They are hardier and usually better natured than the milk. And (I'll stick my head in the noose here...) Ball Pythons are not the best beginner snake. First, if they are not captive born then you have all kinds of problems with getting them to feed, plus they like it on the warm side (90 daytime). I find it a constant source of irritation that so many petshops sell w/c ball pythons to beginners (which is why more people come to me with problems about them than any other snake). it is easier with a (proven) c/b Ball. When picking, look for scars a fair indicator that it is wild caught.

Ok, thanks!
There is a really nice shop a few cities from here. The guy who owns it is great, I'm sure he'll tell me which are cb and which are wc.
I have to admit, I am more than partial to the kingsnake.
Is there a certain locale that is easier to work with? I'm thinking about a black and white one. (I can't remember what it was called).
Thanks again!

It really is more a matter of taste when it comes to kings. if it's healthy and looks good to your taste that is all that matters...other than that there is no real difference.

Try this...a great place to start....

I've heard quite a few horror stories about ball pythons.
I've only owned two snakes, and the one I currently have, well I havent had it long enough to tell you much about it besides the basic care stuff...
However, I can say the rosy boa I had was a sweetheart of a snake.

Hi if I was looking at my first snake as I did many years ago..... I would certainly look at a corn snake first, not only are they an ideal first snake but the colors can be mind blowing.

With the king snake I would go for a Cali king as these are the most easily kept.

Clink on my link for a up and comming site dedicated to beginners.
