Why is she on her side?

novicekeeper May 06, 2011 01:36 AM

I checked on my collection tonight and noticed this female laying on her side on the "hot" side of her cage. I haven't seen this before since I'm not too experienced with pythons, I'm more of a boa guy. She was with a male pied about a month or so ago but no activity was noticed so he was pulled. Any info is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Probably building eggs.
Just because you didn't witness a lock doesn't mean it didn't happen.
She also looks like she is about to shed.
Mark 27-30 days after she sheds...you'll PROBABLY have eggs.

i have a few females that will do this sometimes that are not gravid but since she is going into shed and she was with a male recently chances are you may have a clutch coming your way.

Looks very swollen to me . Congrats ,is she het pied or you just going for 100% hets?

She is an unconfirmed het albino, I paired her with a pied since he is the only male I have that's close to breeding age. Like I said I'm more of a boa guy and have been breeding boas for years but this is my first attempt with pythons. My male pied is only about 400-500 grams and I pulled him after seeing no activity cause I thought he might have been too small. He was only with her for about 2 weeks but they spent more time away from each other on separate sides of the cage. Who knows if something could have happened but in the off chance she's gravid, I do have my incubator all set up and ready to go so I'm not totally unprepared. hah. Thanks for the input guys and if she turns out to be gravid I'll be sure to post updates, especially since it'll be my first clutch.

separate sides?

perhaps they did not want you to see their love for each other.

Sometimes even males do this, but she looks like she is gravid. Gravid females typically do this apparently they feel more comfortable that way. Count the days after the shed (about a month)and you might get eggs then. Good Luck!
