Northern red-legged frog husbandry

rana Sep 29, 2003 11:13 AM

Hi

I was planning to raise some northern red-legged frog for a project. I would be using 10 gal tanks for maybe 20 eggs each. A nylon mesh square basket would fit the 10 gal tank and a nylon mesh will be use to suspend the eggs. No filtering system would be used . An aeration stone will be used throughout the project. Two tanks would be used for one group of eggs and eventually larvae. The mesh nylon basket would be pulled out from one aquarium into the other tank that has been waiting for 2 days. The water I plan on using is deionized water that is buffered with rock salt. The two tanks will be acclimated for at least 2 days each and the temperature will be controlled by the ambient room temperature.

Would this process of transfering egg/larvae be stressful and result in death or sickness?

Would rabbit chow mixed with gelatin and agar be a decent food source for larvae?

What do I feed metamorphs? The same food as larvae...?

What about Juveniles? Maybe little crickets or wax worms?

Any help would be appreciated..
Thanks

Actually, I beleive that is a protected species, so having them wouldn't be allright without the proper permits.

Thanks for the reply

I know that the California red-legged frog, a sub-specie of the northern red-legged frog is listed. The northern red-legged frogs will probably come from Washington. I'm in the process of getting all the proper papers done. I've talked and arranged with the Wash, FWS.

Thanks for your good advice with native animals.

Any advice on my original questions..out there..anybodyyyyyyy
