Health question... Please help....

brdfreak Sep 29, 2003 12:24 PM

One of the prettiest beardies from the clutch I have has something wrong... I picked it up yesterday to check the sex and when I got it on its back and rolled the tail back a bit I noticed it was swollen around the vent and then some white pussy looking stuff came out along with alot of fluid. Then today I went to check it again and I pushed a bit on the side of the vent that was swollen worse and a thick little chunk of white gunk came out then blood from the vent. It has also stopped eating now and is begining to walk around funny like it is dizzy or unstable or something. None of the rest of them are showing any signs of being sick nothings swollen etc.... Just him. I'm setting a vet appt. but thought someone might know what it could be?
Thanks,
Robert Wood

...they'll be able to help! Has your baby been pooping? I'd separate it from the others & try giving it warm soaks. The soaks may help relieve any discomfort she's feeling. I wouldn't apply any pressure to the swollen area. Also, make sure to keep her hydrated by letting small drops of water fall onto her nose. Many ppl. use Pedialyte, too, but it's only good for 2 days. Let us know what the vet says!

Sounds like some sort of parasite. Glad you scheduled a vet appointment.

Not sure if this is a parasite..but something has caused irritation and infection in her vent area...I wouldn't squeeze it at all anymore, though you could try soaking. A vet visit is deffinitely in order as she may need antibiotic to combat the infection and find out the cause. It may have been an injury from a cage mate or she may have rubbed against something sharp in the enclosure.

bacteria is the most often found bacteria in reptiles and just like coccidia can bloom so can the bacteria and not show on a normal fecal float. This can cause symptoms like you describe and can be very serious for a baby.

Please let us know what the Vet says

GOod luck with the baby and like others said, separate it from the others and the soaks may help a lot.
