Picky feeders

stefan82 Sep 29, 2003 12:52 PM

I got a Male and a Female rainbow, but they seem like they are both very picky feeders, my Ball is a beast compared to them, they don't eat very much even though its been week since the female got, and 1 1/2 since the male got food.. i think its very strange that they are picky feeders, rainbow's is supposed to be agressive feeders with a capacity that doesn't end untill you stop putting food infront of them...

Anyone who got picky feeder rainbow(s) ?

Stefan,

I would first consider your husbandry and make sure everything is up to par. I would also make certain you are not feeding too big a prey item and they are not about to shed. You did not mention their ages, but I assume thay are both babies. Also check with their breeder to see what, how, and what time of day they ate.

Strange as it seems to me my female prefers light colored rats to darker ones and eats faster if the sun is down.

My baby eats everthing she gets so long as it's not wet.

I have found that if I feed at night my BRB's have a much better feeding repsonse.

Well, the husbandary is right, 24C one the cold side, 29C on the warm side, approx 80-90percent humidity, but the thing is i keep male and female (9month's) old in the same cage.. so i have to get them out of the cage for feeding, but mostly its lit in the room , maybe i should wait till the light's goes off in the tank and then turn the lights off in my room when i take them out and feed them, i feed one in the tank and one in a petbox..

The other thing is they are always hiding, i never see them except for when feeding them , is this usual for rainbows?.

Stefan,
. You posted earlier that the snake had been laying upside down. Now they are not eating well. I think this is may be odd behavior for young BRBs. You mentioned that they had been treated for mites. What was used to treat them for mites?

They we're never treated for mites, i thought she had mites.. but she didn't, well I think my problem is that im not feeding them in the dark, i fed her once with the lights off, and she was fine about it, and i also talked to the breeder who i got her from.. They do that, Even Tigers do that cause they are so "swollen" that its more comfy lying that way, she stopped lying on the side when the mouse was "processed" so that wasn't a problem really .. hehe if you think my husbandary is wrong i can take digital photos of my hygro / temp gauge if you'd like the temps and the humidity is perfect..

And the male i got is not so troublesome i think the female is a picky individual..
She eats though, only she tends to swollow it the second time she constricts it
