Finicky Rat Snake...

pgcc0912 May 13, 2011 11:06 AM

I have an 8 year old LTR that eats only 2 months (May, June) the entire year. I've tried rats, mice, chicks to no avail. It's really weird because she's about 6ft and weighs 1600 grams, so she's not malnourshied. I just find it strange that she won't eat any other time of the year. Temps are correctly set at 85 on warm end and 73 on cool end. There are hides on both sides. All my other snakes eat year round except for winter. Anyone have any suggestions to get this girl eating consistently?

1600 grams sounds like a healthy six foot pantherophis to me. Sure looks healthy. I'm beginning to catch on that adult snakes don't need that much to eat. In fact, I think once they reach adult size most of it just gets crapped-out.

Yeah, I agree once they're adults they don't need as much, but it's still frustrating knowing that her brothers and sisters are almost twice the girth. I guess she's just one of those snakes that doesn't require a lot of food.

That is drop-dead gorgeous! My Calico is about 4 1/2 feet (rough estimate) now at 1000 grams and feels really heavy for a rat. How much do the girthy ones weigh?

The mother of this snake was huge, approximately 6-7ft and was thick as a brick. She must have weighed over 2500grams. The siblings are all over 2000 grams easy. I guess this is just a large line of leucistics. I've never seen any LTR's as big as this line.

Good Lord that is an impressive Picture. I thought I had large Texas Rats. To answer your original question I have had luck with finicky Texas Rat snakes taking small fuzzy rabbits. They can be a pain to locate but you might get lucky with a local rabbit breeder saving them for you.

I swear, I've never had a snake pic knock me out of my chair like that! Next time give a warning!

Where have you been hiding that monster? That must be the biggest rat in the world and then some! Yikes, that is IMPRESSIVE!!!

I'd love to see more pics.

btw, for all it's worth, I just measured my calico and he is well over 5 feet (~63" @ 975 grams and growing.

If that thing has the typical T-Rat 'tude I'd be wearing body armor!

BTW that is MY female, NOT the mother. The mother was TWICE the girth of my female, I kid you not. She was as thick as a medium sized boa. The mother has since passed and unfortunately I don't have any pictures.
