found a 6-leg bullfrog: is this rare?

mitchbuff May 13, 2011 05:31 PM

I know this is the snake forum, but this is where I normally post. My friend who is a school teacher had a student bring in a seemingly normal sub-adult bullfrog, with two extra upper arms on his left side. Since I am the "reptile guy" in my town, she wanted to know if I would keep him. Since I don't know much about amphibians I was wondering if this is a common condition, or really rare, as I personally have never heard of it. I would post a pic, but she isn't giving him to me until next week, as she is taking it back to her biolgy class. Any input would be most helpful

Well, it certainly is less common than six-legged frogs, but I have seen and heard of countless frog deformities in the past with multiple legs, etc...Frogs and other amphibians are some of the most sensitive creatures on our planet, and are viewed by many scientists/biologists as "gauges" for pollution and toxins in the environment. Many chemicals/pollutants have been shown to cause many abnormalities in frogs in many different parts of the world.

I'm sure if you did a google search, you would see more on this than you could possibly shake a stick at too. They are far more common than most people would think.
