keeping snakes out of a chicken coop

varanid May 13, 2011 05:46 PM

Figured this is as good a place as any...I've got a former coworker whose parents are ranchers in the S. eastern TX panhandle and they've been having problems with bullsnakes and rat snakes getting into the chicken coop. last year they found 2 bulls and a rat eating chicks. They're trying to figure out a way to snake proof an open air chicken coop...any ideas? I was thinking maybe some very fine mesh like in a screen door but they're worried that wouldn't allow sufficient ventilation for the chickens if it was entirely enclosed in that.

1/4 inch hardware cloth should work, but it may be costly, to do a large area. It should allow adequate ventillation.

When I lived in southwestern Michigan and kept chickens there was a big black snake who sometimes would steal chicks and eggs, but it did such a bang up job on the rodents in the chicken coop how could I begrudge it some chicken once in awhile. The funniest thing was one time I found this snake coiled up under a sitting hen. It looked like she was trying to incubate it, since it had eaten her eggs already.

1/2 to 1/4 inch hardware cloth should work fine.

I guess chicken wire would be the most obvious answer, but many smaller snakes can get their heads stuck in it and die. I don't know if the snakes safety was an issue?

1/8 inch hardware cloth works very well for keeping snakes and rodents out. It would have to be a very tiny snake to get its head caught in that. Frankly, I would just tolerate the snakes as they really are death on rodents which are much worse in the coop.
