Cham cage mesh, cloth...advice?

iso Sep 29, 2003 02:10 PM

Hello

What would the best size of mesh to get for a cham cage? I want something that will do the following:

Allow max light to get in
Keep crickets in
Not be a problem with toes getting caught
large enough to twist tie braches and other itmes.

ANy ideas? WOuld 1/8" be too small? or too big?

thank you all

The best and safest for your chams is 1/4, in my opinion. But crix can escape with 1/4.

1/8 wont let the crix escape, but might be dangerous for the nails... but if the cage is big enought, with tons of branches to climb on, he probably wont go on the screen.

cool. thanks man. I thought the 1/8 might be a bit on the small side.

I think what Ill do it 1/4" on the inside..and use window screen on the outside...that should do what I need.

What kind of screen will you use?

Inside? plastic coated hardware cloth. 1/4" outside will be window screen. Alum or nylon...the kind currently used on the majority of cages out there (not on reptariums)

the top would be metal..not plastic coated..to avoid burn or melting

I did the same thing. I used metal window screen for the outside layer, and a plastic hardware cloth type of thing for the inside. I just used the screen on the top, but then Orion decided to go exploring up there and hurt two toenails, and I ended up using the plastic stuff anyways. I was worried about it melting, but if you think about it if it is hot enough there for the plastic to melt, andyour cham can get there, than you have more to worry about than just toes catching... it will burn your cham. The plastic is pretty tough, so it should be ok, as long as your lamp is suspended off of the top of the cage. Or, you can use screen to hold up the lamp, and use the plastic as a roof a few inches down from the screen to give space to keep your cham away from the light.
Also, you can get PVC coated 1/4" hardware cloth. Most places you have to special order it in 100' rolls, so it's mostly just worth it if you are going to make another cage now or down the road you can save it. That is your best bet.
