jason May 17, 2011 07:27 PM

This is the second clutch of the year for me to decide that 51 days was long enough to cook.

..back to Ball Pythons...

Is that just a Butter or a Butter mixed with something else? You managed to get a lot of text on to the top of that little egg! Any more pictures of the clutch?

That's just a straight butter. the text on top was a date with "butter x normal". This clutch turned out to be a bit of a mess so I didn't get too many photos right away. a butter and a normal went full term and died in the egg and another butter had a twisted umbilicus and died before I found him. I'll get photos of the remaining 6 babies when they are safely out of the egg. Really bummed about how this clutch went.

Too bad. Seems like there are more likely to be those incidental mortalities all in one clutch. Bad gene combo? Mother too fat/thin, not enough nutrients? Placement, temperature, or humidity within egg box? Who knows. We just got a 10 egg clutch from our Kingsnake hybrid, nine went bad. *shrugs* Better luck next time!

I don't know all the details on your clutch, but you did mention 2 died full term in the egg! How did they go full term, when you cut them at 51 days? Did they die after you cut them? Just an idea! Seems like every year, people cut eggs earlier and earlier!

jason May 18, 2011 10:15 AM

They were dead before I cut them, and I only cut because 2 had pipped on their own. generally I wait until later than that to cut. My first clutch this year had babies that actually pipped and left the egg on their own at day 51, and I have had other clutches hatch on day 52. I've also had others go till day 65.

Thermostat is set at 89 and I keep the probe nestled in one of the egg clumps in the incubator. The most fluctuation i usually get is /- 1 degree.

A nature's spirit, which I've been using for the past 4 seasons, and I don't use substrate, which I've been doing for the past 3 seasons.
